Q: Switching neurologists -- critical time...

I've arrived at the conclusion to switch neurologists after seeing one for 11 years. The current doctor and his staff are very indiffrent--if not hostile, and I believe they have deliberately avoided responding to calls, requests for tests, perscriptions, etc., because of their indifference.

Moreover, the neurologist has been censured by the state board two years ago, because he was found to be renewing pain medication without new evaluations with patients. As a result, the neurologist has become defensive with patients having nothing to do with his infractions, and recently, as he was talking about physical therapy, he immediately starting saying "i'm not making any money on this / not getting kickbacks..." I was taken back, since i've never discussed anything other than MY own personal medical issues.

Dragging his feet about setting MRI appointments, and a general combative tone has led me to make this decision. I need someone who is seriously interested in preserving/improving my health, not one who is self-interested and seemingly hostile when serious medical questions  are asked of him (ex. asking about the side effects of the MS drugs he's trying to push).

With many frightening physical effects making me a shattered, nervous wreck (and i know of no distraction or relaxation exercises that help), I need to act as soon as possible. I guess i'm wondering how many of you have faced the same problem--especially at a critical time?

Hello GF,

I am terribly sorry that your current doctor is acting inappropriately. I suggest you report him either to the State Licensing Board or the AMA (opinion).  If it were me, I wouldn't want to risk harming anyone else with this doctors misconduct.

In answer to your question, after 22 years of seeing the same neurologist I began receiving sub-par exams so I left and found another recommended neurologist.  In another post of mine, I spoke about how the second neurologist mishandled me in every way (http://www.healthcentral.com/multiple-sclerosis/c/40203/149061/care).  Now I go to a third neurologist that I am very happy with.

You deserve and are entitled to quality medical care, and I suggest you gather some recommendations for a neurologist who specializes in MS. Feel comfortable with her/him; bring a list of your questions and concerns.  Stay with her/him if you feel comfortable; if not move on! You deserve the best care possible.

I hope I have helped.  Please let me know whether you have any other questions, and keep us posted on how you are.

Thank you for your response. I have scheduled an appointment with a new neurologist--one who visited me when I was admitted in the hospital last month. She has high ratings, and no negatives from the various doctor rating sites, so i'm hoping she will actually show me the care and concern I desperately need.
