Q: I need some answers for symptoms that are progressively getting worse.

I have been seeing doctors for symptoms that I have been having for the past year.  At this point, I am not sure what to do or think.  First of all I what I call "jolts" in my head and down my arms and back.  This started about 2 - 3 years ago.  I have muscle spasms about 10% of the day and it seems to be more in sides, but I can get them anywhere.  One episode I had I felt like someone was taking a torch to foot and nothing I did would stop the pain and burning, it just eventually went away on its own after a while.  I get weakness in my arms and legs.  Another episode I had about one year ago was I woke up and I could barely lift my head.  My neck felt as though it was asleep and could not hold the weight of my head.  What has really scared me lately is I had a kidney infection at the beginning of this month and had to have a spinal tap down because they wanted to rule out menigitis.  Since then, I have had pretty much constant muscle spasms, muscle tightness, weakness, fatigue, ringing in my ears, white spots in my vision and I feel like everything has gone down hill from there.  Four months ago, I had an episode where all my muscles in my neck, upper and lower back and down my arms were so tight, I could barely move anything.  My sister is a physical therapist assistant and she would do massages and taught me different exercises to help me to be able to move right again, but they did not help.  My muscles eventually calmed down after about one month, but I am afraid of it happening again, and I do not have any answers at this point.  I have been searching for an answer, and MS seemed to be the closet thing to match what is going on.  Is there anything else I can do or anything else it could be???  I am scheduled to have an MRI done next week and blood work, but could this show anything or help me get closer to an answer??

Chrisy,

Don't give up yet. The MRI will give your doctor valuable information and a clue as to whether you have MS or not. The diagnosis of MS is a difficult one. If necessary, a second opinion can offer a fresh perspective. Unfortunately, there is no single test for MS.

Please read the information on diagnosing MS. If you don't already have one, begin a medical journal.

Please return and let us know how you are doing. You are not alone.
