Hi MWMS,

I have been using self cath since the early years of my MS. (I've been living with it for 22+ years) I was pretty distressed at first, since then they have become a huge relief. Being unable to empty and also hold it makes for a pretty toxic situation all day long.  (in an emotional way!) So once I got used to it, it has turned out to be a very important element of my every day.

In the beginning, based on insurance coverage, I sterilized and reused. (not unlike a baby bottle- in boiling water) I kept getting bladder infections and thus have been on a prophelactic dose of Macrobid since.  Shorly thereafter I began to use a new one everytime and the infections ceased!(I have always used Coloplast catheters (formerly Mentor).

Of course these experiences are gender specific- so I'm afraid I can't really say anything specific to your case. All I can say is: It was well worth the discomfort (which ultimately goes away) to gain the benefits.

I wrote an essay here that touches on the subject if you are interested~

And if you have any other questions send them my way. Perhaps I can answer them.

Best,

Amy
