Monday, March 29, 2010 Anna, Community Member, asks

Q: how long does it take to get the results from a lumbar puncture?

I had an LP on the 19th of March. How long does it take to hear the test results? Will my Neuro call when the tests come in or should I call him? My next appointment isn't until the 14th of April.

Hi Anna,

I don't recall how long it took before my LP results came back.  In my case, however, the result was positive for O-bands and I received a phone call from my neuro's infusion nurse to set up a week of Solumedrol treatments.  My neuro was waiting for the test results to prescribe treatment for the acute attack.  I believe it had to have been at least a week from LP to the phone call.

Depending upon your situation, and especially since you have an appointment in a couple of weeks, you might not hear anything until that appointment.  If you haven't heard anything by next Wednesday, you could call the office to ask about the results.  You might even explain that you'd like to have all the information so that you can be best prepared for your appointment the following week.

good luck.

Hi Lisa, If my results would come back positive for O-Bands will that mean I could have MS? Both of my MRI's showed spots on my brain. This years had more then last years. I have had health issues for a long time. Finally a year ago I started seeing a Neurologist. I hope to have some kind of an answer soon. If not Ms then I hope they can tell me what is happening with me. I'm so grateful this site is available to learn about MS and ask questions.

I agree it sounds as if you should have some type of answer in April. However, we don't   know the doctor's plan.

There is a possibility that instead of MS, you will be given the term "possible" MS.  That is not unusual.

If you get no answer, ask the doctor what to expect and when. There may be no answer, but at least you will know.

Thank you, I will ask the doctor. If he has no answer for me or if he says it's a possible MS  then I will have to except that answer. But I'm hoping that won't happen. I will let you know what he tells me on the 14th.

Hi Anna,

You might ask your doctor when you go in Apr. 14.  It is possible to get reslts from a spinal tap the same day you go in, but he may want to spend some time comparing the results with your March test.  He may be looking for something in particular, or he may need to interpret the results or the difference in results for both tests.

I wish you luck on your upcoming test. Please let us know how it comes out.
