Does food effect , what should be avoided
This is a very good question, but tricky, as there are a lot of different viewpoints regarding diet and MS.
There are many claims of an MS cure through diet alone. Personally, I don't buy it.
However, I am a firm believer in a good, balanced diet for overall health. The more we do to remain healthy, the more strength we have to fight MS, as well as anything else which comes our way.
I have stuck to a balanced diet for several years now and feel much better for it. What do I avoid? "Junk." When I give in to a craving for junk food in large portions, I soon regret it, and I just don't feel well. It takes some time to adjust to "real" food, as opposed to a steady diet of "junk" food, but it is well worth it.
I suggest the basic food groups, all things in moderation, and a good dose of common sense.

Thanks for your posting your question. I think with everything diet is always a factor. We read about this all the time with lots of scenarios, MS or not. You may be interested in reading our material from the Living with MS section, specifically the lifestyle changes like dietary factors.
hope this helps, all the best, sue

Hi Allel,
I also don't necessarily believe that MS can be cured or treated with nutrition alone. But I do believe that people (with MS or not) can be sensitive to different foods.
For instance, if I eat bakery chocolate chip cookies from the grocery store, my hands and feet swell up the following day. There is something which they put in their cookies which my body reactions to and it makes my arthritis symptoms worse.
The NMSS advocates a balanced diet, low in saturated fats, high in fresh produce, etc. What have you tried related to food? Care to share more information?
