Q: multiple sclerosis and panic attacks, connected?

I have recently been waking from a sound sleep with panic attacks.  I am also in menopause. Are the panic attacks more from hormonal issues from the menopause, or is it related to the MS? I don't have any during the day, only at night after falling asleep.

Hi Kim,

I had not associated panic attacks directly with MS until researching for an article here.  You can read what I found out and the comments of community members in the Sharepost - Mental Health and MS: Anxiety Disorders.  I don't know about the possible relationship of panic attacks and menopause, but they certainly can be associated with MS.  Bring it up with your doctor and see what the recommendations are.

I have had MS for twenty years and never had a panic attack. My ovaries were removed and I went into immediate menopause---no panic attacls. That said, many with MS and other chronic illnesses have panic attacks. Many women going through menopause have panic attacks. What is the cause? I know of no science that has a definitive answer. A Dr. can prescribe meds. A naturopath can tell you what to take. I suggest you manage them by trying different defenses, something will work for you. Talk therapy has been helpful to many. Here are a few other possibilities that may be causing your panic:

  • Mitral valve prolapse, a minor cardiac problem that occurs when one of the heart's valves doesn't close correctly.
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Stimulant use (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine)
  • Medication withdrawal

All can be dealt with, don't worry! Talk to your Dr. and Good luck! Smile
