Q: Is this spasticity?

I am in the process of the dx of MS. Neuro did some usual tests plus the test with the electricity on my legs and with the needle in the leg muscle. He has done two rounds of bloodwork with the last chking magnesium and calcium. FIrst round showed B12 def. so am self admin 1CC every two weeks. I have many of the symptoms ie... intolerance to heat, tremor in left and right arms, and now occassionally head, tripping bec. of foot dragging, swallowing difficulties, balance problem esp at night and with eyes closed,, dizziness, constant dry mouth, headaches, brain fog, as I am a teacher and my multitasking skills are completely in toilet, plus more I cannot remember for now. The question I have is about the tensing of muscles that seems to happen unintentionally. For over a year it was mostly gritting my teeth and jaw during the day or biting the inside of my cheek. Now, during work, or resting on bed I find my muscles in my legs, buttocks, toes, hands neck etc.. contracting without conscious thought. Even trying to go to sleep I have to run an internal dialog to find all of the tense muscles in my body and remind myself to release the tension. So here is the questions, finally, this tensing of the muscles throughout my body is this considered spasticity? I do not have pain, except with the toe cramping. My neuro was not impressed that I had done research on my symptoms and asked about MS as a possibility. He wanted my next appt. to be 2 months from the last and I asked for one month from last since I am not getting any better my worse. Any thoughts would be truly appreciated. Hi T,

I hope that you continue to get good care.  Objectively, the way you describe your experience with the different tests occuring one after the other is encouraging.  Taking things step by step.

As far as the spasms you are experiencing, they are not exactly like spasticity.  Spasticity is more of a constant pulling of muscles in two directions (two muscles pulling against each other) and is common in the legs (calves and hamstrings for me).  Magnesium deficiency can cause problems with muscles so it is good to have that tested.

Spasms (the sudden muscle contractions) can be caused by MS.  But I don't know if what you are describing fits exactly.  I hope that you begin to find more concrete answers soon.
