Q: what are MS markers? Last December after seeing a neurologist and having an MRI he said when I was hospitalized 5 months earlier I had a lacunar stroke and had sub cortical small vessel disease,

BUT no more MS markers. Since than I have gotten increaseingly worse. Pains in head, down thru eyes, legs, feet, arms, hands and up spine. Left leg feels heavy and drags. Left eye blurry, sharp stingy like pains in both eyes. Trouble with hand eye co-ordination, concentrating, remembering and getting thoughts out. Urine leakage, constupation. I have an overall weak and exhausted feeling. I know after a stroke I shouldn't get worse, and have read up on MS since the dr mentioned it, but can't find any thing about MS markers?

Hi Fiona,

The phrase "MS markers" sounds like something which might be found in the blood, but MS doesn't have markers in the blood which are tested.  Genetics research is looking into that but that would not be what your doctor is referring to.

There are MS lesions which can be seen in MRI scans.  Neurological tests can be done to also try to locate or confirm the presence of lesions.  To be diagnosed with MS, lesions most certainly must be found.

But it sounds like you've got lots of symptoms going on.  Please call your doctor.  If you are having another stroke, you need to seek treatment immediately.  If something else is going on, then maybe the doctors can help stop it in its tracks.

Yes Lisa I do have lesions on my brain. At my last MRI in December 2010, I had 7.  I have never had any blood work done, except July 2010 when I was in the hospital for a suspected stroke, that it took them 5 months to decide I had a stroke. Besides my other symptoms my body also gets heated up and has a hard time cooling down, like I can't regulate my body temperature.

Hi fiona 02,

In addition to the sound advice Lisa gave you, I want to add that you really do need to see your doctor about your stroke, MS, and anything your other symptoms may be pointing to.  Although you said you know that a stroke cannot get worse, my personal experience with watching my father (and this is only opinion, and this is my dad with his personal experience with stroke, which may not be what is happening to you) symptoms from a stroke did get a bit worse over time.  I strongly suggest you see your doctor, take the list of issues you listed here, and go over each one of them with him.  It sounds as if you may have a few things going on, and it's always better to err on the side of caution by scheduling an appointment with your doctor.
