Q: I have MS. Does this have anything to do with the itching sensations and leg spasms I get at night

I have MS and have about everthing going wrong with me it seems.  I have an skin itching spell I go through at night as well as severe leg spasms, bowel  and bladder problems as well.  What causes all of this?  Should I see my neurlogists?

Hi Christene

I am so sorry you are having to deal with all of these symptoms at once.  And yes MS is most likely causing all of this.  I am going to give you a bunch of information now but first of all I would strongly suggest that yes!...please do contact your neurologist!  You don't have to suffer needlessly with all of these symptoms.  There are things your doctor can prescribe to help.

I am going to give you the link for our web page devoted to MS symptoms.  I am sure you will find your symptoms here.

Here is information about treatment for MS bladder issues.

Likewise, here is information we have for treatment of MS bowel issues.

Lisa has written a good article about spasticity which you can view right here.

And last but not least, here is some really good information from the National MS Society about MS itching which is called Pruitis.  It seems that this type of itching is not caused by allergies and is not going to respond to topical creams.

The National MS Society recommends either taking Tegretol, Neurontin, Elavil, or Atarax for MS itching.  But do see your doctor so that they can best advise you on this.  Your doctor can determine if your itching is definitely from MS and not from some other cause.

I am hoping that others in our community here can chime in with their experiences about how they have been coping with these MS symptoms.

Hope this helps some!  And thank you for your question.

Hi Christene 1,

From experience, yes to everything you ask about. What has helped me most is Lyrica. I've been through all the other meds plus some and this has helped my legs the most. I've been getting Dopicar since dx which seems to have helped with the itch and somewhat with the leg spsams.

Yes, by all means see your neuro. He/She can prescribe various meds for these sx.

Good luck and feel good.

Peace & Serenity,

Maris in Israel
