My wife has a great deal of fatigue with her MS and is worried about functioning when she goes back to work. If she can't perform the responsibilities (she is a nurse and does a lot of rushing around) can she claim disability. she really wants to work, but what if she can't due to extreme fatigue?

Hi Wayne,

This is a tough question.  I assume you are talking about disability insurance (SSDI). It is not easy nor quick, but may take several tries before it is approved.

The question for SSDI is not "Are you disabled?", but "Are you disabled enough?" The main criterion is whether your condition prevents you from doing your past work or adjusting to other work. They use five questions to determine if your disability qualifies under the Social Security definition.

The first thing to do is talk with your doctor.

I know it is not easy to give up a career that took so much education and provides satsifaction.  We need good nurses and will mmiss her, but fatigue really is debilitating.  I wish you and your wife luck.  Let us know.
