Q: While on Solumedrol, how long does the insomnia last?

I was diagnosed with MS 9 years ago and was immediately put on Betaseron. I responded well to it. Long story short, I recently had a baby and would like to nurse him for a year. I can't take Betaseron, obviously, so my doctor was concerned that there was no blood brain barrier that Betaseron provided. So, he prescribed Solumedrol. I had my first infusion yesterday and did not sleep well last night at all.

Hi K. Dening:

I have had MS since 1976 and have had to be on IV SoluMedrol at various times for three to seven days.  Sleep is a wish....this med causes drastic sleep disturbances, blood sugar elevations, vision changes (usually due to blood sugar changes), metallic taste, sensation changes in appendages (sometimes) and fatigue.

If you can, try to make a schedule where you taper from say, five days down to one and then off all together. Pregnancy and birth are natural protectants against flares and relapses so I am sure your doc only has you on SoluMedrol for a short time anyway.

But if his/her plan is for long term, discuss it and your concerns.  You really only need a taper if exhibiting any symptoms.  You were probably off Betaseron while pregnant, so you shouldn't need anything now after the birth.  It is best to talk to a counsellor who has experience in MS drugs and pregnancy/birth.  It is rare that after giving birth that females would need to go right back on an MS drug.  So check and see, but it has been my experience that you should be okay for up to a year, barring stressful situations (like birth isn't stressful!)
