What is the average age of MS onset
My husband is 63 and has been experierencing MANY of the MS symptoms for the past 4 years. He has what we have titled "episodes" which totally wipe him out. He has seen a neurologist and had a MRI. They say he is to old and the MRI shows no lesions. He also has a brother with MS and 2 neighbor girls next to his farm growing up have also been diagnosed with MS. Any suggestions as to where we go from this point would be appreciated.
Hi TJ,
When people talk about MS, the age is in the 30s or 40s. However, that is no longer necessarily true.
For years children were not even considered candidates for MS, but now we know that many children have MS. It is not unusual for young adults to be diagnosed with MS. At the same time, older adults are not immune either.
Often people with definite MS have clear MRIs. There are other tests that can be done, such as a spinal MRI, a lumbar puncture, or evoked potentials. there are also many conditions that mimic MS so MS-like symptoms do not necessarily point to MS.
Talk to your neurologist again or get a second opinion. Be sure to have a list of all of the symptoms over the last four years. MS is difficult to diagnose and it usually takes a long time. Good luck.
