Hi Susie,

Both of those types of machines can be used.  When I was being diagnosed, the imaging center only had 1.5 tesla machines.  It was fine.  A few years ago they purchased a 3.0 tesla machine and that is what my neurologist prefers that they use with his MS patients.  I have had one trip through that machine.

However, this summer when he wanted me to get an MRI over a weekend only the 1.5 machine was available.  So that's what they used so that they could fit me into the schedule.  It worked out just fine.

The 1.5 tesla MRI is still good, just not quite as powerful as the 3.0.
