Q: Copaxone injection site reactions

Hello!  Thanks to those that responded to my first question.  It really helped!  What a great resource we have here!

I have been on Copaxone for a week and a half and was feeling like "ok, this isn't so bad", a bit of stinging after which is well-managed with ice...then the last day or so all sites I have used thus far, except the hips, have come up with a red welp that itches a bit and is hot to the touch, the most recent are the largest with the first being the smallest.

Any suggestions?  Will this pass?  Could Benadryl help?

Also, I have been trying to time my injections between 9-10 pm.  Should I be more strict about doing it at the exact same time or is a window of an hour or two ok?

Thanks!

Heather

Hi Heather,

Glad that you found the information useful.  Go back and read the Injection Tips, but in the meantime I've got some questions.

Are you using the Autoject?  If so, are you continuing to press harder after you've released the spring button?  No need to push the Autoject too firmly against the skin.  If you do, you will increase the likelihood of creating welps.

If you are injecting manually, experiment with your injection angle.  Be sure to get the medication well into the fat layer without hitting a muscle.

Another thing to consider, warmth helps to increase circulation.  It could be that the icepack following the injection is causing the medication to stay localized longer, thus encouraging a welt to develop.

In my opinion, you're doing fine with the injection schedule.  Give to take an hour is just fine, but be sure not to miss any injections.

After awhile, I stopped getting so many site reactions.  It was almost like my body decided to stop reacting so much and just gave into the idea of a daily foreign chemical invader.  I only get the stinging now if I inject into a location which I've been avoiding or overlooking.  (Here's a secret, I'm much less strict with rotating all 7 spots than I was when I first began.)

Hang in there.  It does get much easier for most people.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the tips, they worked!  Being more gentle with the autoject, not pushing down so hard and not keeping it pushed down after pressing the button has really helped.  I have also stopped doing any heat or ice altogether.  My site reactions have gotten a TON better.  The issue I am still having is swollen lymph nodes in the groin, they came on after the second injections in the thigh.  I am having them biopsied per my neurologist.  Both the neuro and shared solutions seem to be a bit concerned about this...what have you heard on the subject?

Thanks!

Heather

Hi, it seems as if there are no more places on my body for an injection.  I have been injecting Copaxone since 2006, and I have either bruises or lumps everywhere on the 7-site cycle.  Sometimes, while the needle is in the fatty tissue, a dimple? appears.  There are permanent lumps on each of my thighs.  Some days, I get so down and weary, looking for a site.  The truth is, I'm terrified.  Just me?  So sorry to be the voice of gloom, but injecting hasn't gotten better for me, or maybe I'm experiencing a symptom, namely, mood swings, depression.  Listening.

Oh yes the site reactions.  I got those too.  But I weighed the pros and the cons of the drug, took a vanity check list and decided that I would rather have funky marks instead. I was on Copaxone for 5 years and almost immediately after getting off the drug and rubbing down my legs with Nivea Q10 the scares went away.

Take care of yourself and unless you are in pain for more than 15 minutes.  Live with it.  The stuff works!

i've been on copaxone since '04. the bumps, etc i just took as part of the drug side effects. gotta admit i was surprised to hear the drug causes dimpling. here i just thought it was older age, and cellulite :-). glad to find out i can blame part of it on the drug.

the itching can be annoying. i prtend it's a bug bite. a ms bug bite. :-)

Hi, Thanks so much. I just started copaxone and your question was word for word what I was experiencing. Your question and the answers you received have really put my mind at rest.

That's great to hear!  Definitely hang in there, because I had HORRIBLE site reactions, huge hot, red, itchy welts...larger than the palm of my hand!  This lasted for about 6-8 weeks.  Now, nine months later, I don't use any ice or heat, the injection is no big deal and I don't have anything to speak of for a site reaction.  Good luck and feel free to ask me any other questions.

Take Care!

Heather
