Hi Julie,
I've not done this myself, but here are a couple of links where you might be able to find helpful information regarding applying for disability and supplemental security income. Maybe somebody who has been through the process will have more specific tips.
Hi Julie,
I has a pretty easy time of obtaining disability by using an attorney who work solely on getting people their SSI. I think (it was awhile ago, so forgive me) I was rejected once, which I think is the norm. Then I hired the attorney. He filled out the appropriate paperwork, set up my court date, told me what to say to the judge, provided all of my disability documentation. It ended up I only had to say "yes" when the judge asked me whether all of the information provided was correct.
If you need more information here's a useful link: http://www.ssa.gov/pgm/disability.htm and check out The National MS Society's page about SSI: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/government-affairs-and-advocacy/government-programs/social-security-disability/index.aspx

Cathy - thank you very much for these links. I'm actually in the middle of filling out the paperwork now. I did misspeak in asking about SSI, which I guess is different from disability -- in the end, it doesn't make a difference since the questions are similar.
I appreciate your help!
