Q: Auto Accident and Multiple Sclerosis

Two months ago I was in a rear end auto accident.  I have RR multiple sclerosis.  The accident caused severe spine and neck pain and spasms.  I have arm and leg weakness, and referred pain.  I am in pain management and physical therapy.  The strong medications aren working yet.  Just had my first visit a week ago to PM, so I'll give her a fair chance.  This is my third rear end accident (never my fault), so I was living in chronic pain already.  This one put me over the top.

I saw a spine specialist at Emory and he only addresses spine issues. I showed no immediate new structural damage, but severe soft tissue and nerve issues currently untreatable, except for the symptomatic treatment.  I am hardly able to get around.

I have pre-existing spine conditions, and I'm very concerned about potential impacts of MS and physical trauma coming from either direction.  I have symptoms which can mimic both in MS and accident injuries, i.e. arm weakness, leg weakness, which I did not have to this extent.  I have RR multiple sclerosis which has shown no major flare ups for the past two years.  I used to have them every six months and often needed inpatient rehabilitation.

If you can help me sort through this, or provide advice, I'm appreciative.  Thank you.   Stardust

Hi Stardust,

So sorry to hear that you've been in another auto accident.  It sounds like you are experiencing a great deal of pain.  Have anti-inflammatory medications helped with the swelling and pain to any degree?

Even though it is difficult to know which injury/disease is responsible for different pains, altered sensations, or functional dysfunctions, I hope that you are able to approach your doctors with any new or worsening problems.  It's even better if the doctors can talk to each other and help to pinpoint the best treatment for you.

I know that you asked for help or advice three weeks ago.  Has the situation improved any?
