Q: Electrical Stabbing Pain: Have you had it? Solutions?

For years I've had sporadic jabbing electrical pain in my left thigh. Over the past year this type of pain has spread to my forarm, right leg, and face and increased in frequency. The pain can be so bad that it causes me to double over.

My pain doc and neurologist say there isn't much that can be done. I take the max in prescription meds.

My question is: Have others experienced pain like this?  How have they dealt with it? Do they know any 'home' remedies that provide relief?

I find heat helps. But not much else.

Hi joguinn,

I am so sorry to hear about your pain.  Yes, other MSers have experienced similar pains in different areas, and that includes me. Mine varies from spiral stiletto daggers into my feet to electrical shooting in my mouth.

You are talking about a specific neuropathic pain that is not unusual but is extremely painful. It is true there is often little that can be done. Standard pain killers are generally ineffective.

Medications successfully used include anti-convulsants sold under different brand names. These are not 100% effective, they do not always work, but they work some of the time. Talk with your doctors again to see if there is not something else to try.

Sorry, I just saw this in my older mail. I feel as if I already answered it, but I don't see it, so here goes.

My facial pain is TN, and it started like an electrical storm in my mouth. There are other types of pain, always excrutiating, and always in only the same location. There are three areas that TN affects, the left, the right, and the center. Mine is only on the left, and I am lucky because MSers with TN usually have more than one area affected.

The first attack felt as if there was a lightening storm in my mouth. I felt the electric shocks going from one tooth to another. It was the same as I imagined being eleectrocuted.

TMJ is much more than that. When I first heard heard of it, it was the difficulty getting the upper and lower teeth to fit together, but it is much more. Look here. Like TN, it is a condition that is not exclusive to MS, but when MS is a factor, the TN or TMJ is worse.

If your condition is on all sides of your tongue, it could be either TN or TMJ. Your neurologist can probably help you decide.

Good luck.

Jozee,

Sorry to hear that also you suffer from these pains. The thing in the mouth sounds like trigeminal neuralgia to me. It's one of the most painful and annoying of my sx. There's not much to do about it.

I also get the electric stabs in my mouth (rt side), head (usually behind an ear), my upper rt arm. I take Lyrica for pain, but it doesn't prevent these painful electric stabs. They happen in one part of me or another almost daily Yell.

Hang in there,

Maris

Hi joguinn Smile

I know there aren't any current medications to address this issue. I have experienced the electrical shooting pains. all of a sudden it goes off without any warning and my leg will jump around all on its own...weird thing this MS... I have been taking a mostly natural approach to my healing. Have you ever heard of Apple Cider vinegar? It can be purchase in the natural foods section of your grocery store or a natural foods store. It is important to buy a brand that is organic and has "mother" in it. I still don't understand quite what the "mother" is but I know it is good if it is in there, lol. Ok, so i take 1 tbsp in a glass of water 3 times a day. Incidentally, if you deal with constipation, this will help to clean you out too. It does not cause diarrhea but it helps to stimulate the bowel for sure. Anyway, all of my pains have dissapeared since using the Apple Cider Vinegar. No more shoots out of the blue! I highly recommend you give it a try. Apple Cider Vinegar tastes awful so just gulp it down while you hold your nose; that way, you won't taste it. Once you have finished it, take a clean glass of plain water and rinse your mouth out a few times as Apple Cider Vinegar is very acidic and can erode the enamel on your teeth if left on too long. I noticed a reduction in pain after one day! Weeks later I barely havew any pain at all. I hope it works for you too! Smile

I forgot to add, if you can, drink unfluoridated water. Reverse Osmosis water such as Culligan water does not have any unless it is readded after RO. If you are lucky that your town's/city's water does not add it, just use your tap water.
