Hi Ryan,

Goodness you are dealing with a lot of symptoms.  There are so many possibilities when it comes to finding the cause for symptoms that it can be hard to diagnoses MS.  That's one reason they say that other diseases mimic MS (or is it the other way around?)

First question.  Have you told your doctor about these various symptoms?  Some of these things can be caused by other stuff (such as vitamin deficiencies or other diseases).  That is the first place to start finding answers is in the doctor's office.

Then testing will need to be done, however there is no definitive test to determine if someone has MS or not.  Even if you do have lesions in the brain or on the spinal cord, that still might not be enough to fulfill the criteria for a definite MS diagnosis.

Regardless, you probably would welcome some help alleviating some of the symptoms you are experiencing.  Perhaps you can find some relief.

Please do let us know what your doctor says.

this all started at the 1st of the year with shocking pain in left knee at this time i had heard of MS and thought it was something people were born with i went to ER and they sent me to a sports medicine doctor he examined my knee and said it was fine then checked my back . he poked on it and it hurt very bad he told me there was nothing wrong with knee that it was my back prescribed steroids and muscle relaxers didnt help so we did steroids again nothing so he said i needed MRI   had MRI and i have 3 bulging disk abuting nervs ans some perenial fat  . he sent me to physical theropy it didnt help. al along i was telling him about other symptoms and i actualy had an appt. on a bad day with the sweats and every thing he ask if i was ok and i said this is what it does so he said i wasnt the typical gender but it sounds like MS and he did a brain MRI the contrast fluid went in my arm but the test showed nothing and he said i dont have MS and sent me to a neuroligist. he give me a nerve block it didnt help and a bunch of test eeg , shock test and scheduled me for vers he said he seen something in my righr eye     soo i go back for the vers test and it really sucked but i didnt get to see the doctor i go to reg doctor visit and he ask if neur. has prescribed anything and i said no and he didnt so the reg. refills my prescription 3 or 4 weeks go by and im having a bad couple of days my wife call the neur. they say bring me in so we go in a rush and wait for 5 hours evidentally the doc was having a bad day to he came in the room and was screaming at the nurses why was i in that room who put me in that room looking for the knee hammer throwing stuff around slaming drawers then he starts flipping through my charts and in a very loud voice with the door open he says it looks like we have some illegal activity i said huh? he said i was doing some doctor shopping the way he was acting was crazy then tells me that he will get me an appt. for a carpal tunnel test and a sleep study and says go take this to the front desk and goes out the door

Hi Ryan,

Sounds like you have more than one thing going on.  Bulging disks can cause all sorts of problems.  The steroids you were given were to take down the inflammation.  The muscle relaxers were to help relieve some of pain.  BTW many muscle relaxers are addicting and can be abused by patients.  I'm sorry to hear that physical therapy did not help with your back.

Multiple sclerosis (which shouldn't be confused with muscular dystrophy) is seen in people of both genders.  It is just more common in women, but not exclusive to women.  Sounds like you've had some of the common tests for an MS diagnosis.  (BTW when going in for the Evoked Potentials testing, I never did see the neurologist during that visit.  It is not something which requires the doctor.)

I'm sorry that the neurologist behaved poorly.  Does sound like he didn't want to give up though by recommending a carpal tunnel test and sleep study.

I hope that the visit to your primary doctor goes well.  One thing I would consider doing is getting a copy of your records (including testing reports) from the ER, the sports medicine doctor, the physical therapist, and the neurologist.  It would be good to have this information when you go to a new neurologist.

Good luck.

ryan, i'm not a neurologist and cannot tell you if you have ms but dealing with all these symptoms and not knowing what the cause is is enough to drive you crazy. don't know him but i like your regular dr. because he is trying to find another neurologist. i wouldn't go back to see him again, but then again he might have just been having a bad day. you aren't crazy--it's just the not knowing--chin up--hopefully it won't take long before you know. i'll keep checking here to keep up with your progress--djax59
