Q: Sleep Apnea and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder - associated with MS?

I'm not diagnosed with MS, but rather with "white matter disease" and essential (intention) tremor. I had a past incident of optic-neuritis, documented cognitive problems, and a variety of sensory and vision disturbances exacerbated by fatigue and/or temperature. I have had an MRI and a separate CT scan with enhancing dye, but I was told that the locations and size of the lesions are not consistent with MS. I also had a normal lumbar puncture 18 months ago. Today I was given the results of a recent sleep study and was told that I suffer from "moderate to severe sleep apnea" as well as "periodic limb movement disorder" (PLMD). I do not have Restless Leg Syndrome. My question concerns PLMD and sleep apnea. Is PLMD associated with MS or other "white matter disease". My doctor said that there is a possible connection, but I couldn't find much on the Internet associating the two. I have read about numerous cases of people who suffer from both MS and sleep apnea, but not much connecting these two disorders. I also suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the doctor believes the severity of the PTSD is enhanced by the sleep apnea and PLMD. (The panic and physical response to not breathing at times during the night makes the nightmares, etc. worse.) I may post a question to the HealthCentral "Depression Connection" to ask for more about that. Thanks, KJ

Hi KJ,

It has been a long time since I have seen you.

yes, sleep apnea and MS seem to have a relation. Breathing can stop a few times a minute up to 100 times a minute.

Limb movement disorder may cause repetitive movement every 20 to 40 seconds and it is likely related to sleep apnea. I did not find a direct relationship with MS. Both of these disorders lead to tiredness during the day. There's no surprise there.

Chat with your doctor to see if there is any treatment to ease these two disorders.

I'm glad to hear from you, but sorry if you have these frustrating disorders. I hope you are feeling better. Let us know.

Hi Vicki,

I periodically check back in and look at the Share Posts and Questions. I guess it's human nature to want answers and reassurance when you're not doing well and afraid. I was at a very low point with numerous problems and deterioriating health for all of 2009, but I've improved a lot since then. I like to write and contribute where I can to other people's questions, but (being undiagnosed) I don't feel I have the same credibility as others when I write things. For those reasons I've sort of been "lurking" and reading the posts more than participating.

I don't want MS, but I would like a simple diagnosis or explanation for the various symptoms I have. The sleep study (2nd one I've done) seemed to finally give measurable evidence that something was wrong and I was hopeful it would help to better paint the picture and lead toward some kind of diagnosis.

Thanks for your kind words,

KJ

KJ,

If you are feeling it, you have just as much credibility as anyone else.

Now, MS. Nobody wants it, but if you have it, it would be nice to know so treatment can begin. If you don't have it, you should be able to look elsewhere for an explanation for all of your problems.

You know that sleep epnea is common in the general population. It's just when MSers have it they can stop breathing up to 100 times a minute. I do not understand how that is even possible. So while everyone can have apnea, MSers have it with more intensity. That's true with many conditions.

Go ahead and lurk if you want to, but write as much as you want to as well.
