Q: Whole New Meaning To "I'm Hot!"

I was diagnosed in 2004 and shortly thereafter began having problems with my "internal thermometer". My husband says that it's broken. I get so hot at the drop of a hat and can not get cooled down! I often find myself sweating bullets in the middle of department stores and just taking my coat off isn't enough.

I really dread this summer since the humidity makes my "heat flashes" even worse.  I've heard of cooling vests but there are so many out there that I have no idea which ones are reputable and really work!

According to my OB, menopause isn't an excuse yet.

Hi Sunniflutterby,

I too dread the heat during the summers.  Truly messes with my legs and mental capacity.  The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America has a Cooling Equipment Distribution program for patients who quality.  I received my cooling vest through this program.

The vest I chose is one which uses frozen gel inserts in pockets of the vest to keep cool.  I've got the poncho style which can be seen on this page.  It certainly does help to keep your core body temperature cooler.

Sometimes I've gone to grabbing a few of the gel packs from the freezer and simply holding them against spots on the body for a cooling effect.  Holding cold against the inside of the wrists, back of the neck and upper back, top of the head, as well as around the torso are very effective in achieving a quick response.

The vest I have is not exactly stylish as it has more of a flack jacket look.  But it has allowed me to stay outside with family to enjoy the sun and a little yardwork.

I finally had to get some gel packs last summer.  I found some you can drape over your shoulder.  And I sat on one.  But the jacket might be better for your active lifestyle!

yes. with ms you tend to be hotter than normal. Before i was dianosed i didnt know what was going on. but dress in light clothes and i didnt know this at first but we have to avoid heat. staying out in the heat is not good and hots baths and hot tubs are also not good. BC its no good on the nerves.
