Q: What would make self-catheterization and learning how easier?

I am wondering what things are/would be helpful to someone who catheterizes -- either learning for the first time or that has been doing it for awhile.

I am in marketing at a medical equipment company and want to create something (whether it is text or an actual item) to give people that will help them with self-catheterization. Can anyone tell me what they wish they had when they were learning or something that increases convenience?

I have seen mirrors and things like that -- but what is truly helpful or what is something you wish existed to make things easier?

There are how-to videos and DVDs -- are these helpful? What is good and bad about those?

Thanks.Liz

Hi Liz,

I have never self-cathed so I can't answer your question.  But I do applaud that you are asking for patients input so that you can create helpful material for patients.

Kudos

I was just given the news last month that I have to self-cath.  I'm still learning to find the urethra, but I use a mirror every time, and it's getting easier.  Eventually, we will both end up remembering how it feels when you insert it so that you know you put it in the right place.  It will also become easier over time, to find the urethra without a mirror.
