Monday, September 13, 2010 DogMa asks

Q: Have you had an opportunity to choose between receiving anesthesia(for surgery)as an epidural or general anesthesia since you were diagnosed with MS?

I am having the meniscus in one knee repaired and would prefer to avoid receiving general anesthesia. The anesthetist I spoke with today is concerned with possible links between MS exacerbations/relapses and epidural anesthesia, not to mention his experiences with MS patients and a possibly higher headache risk as a serious complication. He all but refuses to do anything other than general anesthesia due to possible problems. What mode of anesthesia have you had and what were your experiences? I could use some "real people input" please!

Hi DogMa,

I had a baby (now 9 year old) and had no problems with my epidural.  I didn't have a relapse afterwards (only post pardem depression!) . Overall it was a very successful experience and I would do it again if for some reason it were necessary. (no plans 4 more babies!) I hope this is usefull info.

Thank you for replying, Amy. Your experience is helpful to know as I had epidurals with deliveries but that was really long ago and before Dx (altho. I apparenty had Benign MS at the time). I wonder if the "label" is the problem... but you've been diagnosed for quite a while if I remember correctly. I'm just cynical enough to wonder how much a Hx of litigation figures into doctors' 'best care opinions' now-a-days.

HEY DogMa DANIEL here and I guess if you were to tell the doc what your decision is it gives you the right to chose. I have had what they call a cordal block. This is where they put med in your mid soine. I had this twice but anesthesia with back surgery and prefer this. I have had M.S. for a long time. DXed in 1998 but believe had it before then. well I hope this helps. BLESS YOU LOTS. bye for now!!!!

I have been able to have general when I had a broken bone that had to be surgically fixed and I have had a nerve block with sedation.  No problems with either one.  I have had MS since 1997 and both these things have been recent.  Good luck.  Kathleen

Thnak you all for your answers re your anesthetic experiences. I am now recovering from my meniscus repair, done under IV anesthetic. I believe all went well although it took me longer than expected to wake fully. That I attribute to the anesthesiologist's not believing me when I warned him that I am usually very reactive to such meds. Oh well, I am here and able to tell about it, so I guess I can't complain. Seems that I am experiencing a slight exacerbation of some MS symptoms like fatique, muscle and joint pain, temperature fluctuations and an increase in external temperature intolerance, somewhat like the early effects of when i started Rebif, now that I think about it. Hopefully these will pass soon.

Again, thank you  for your replies. Your input was helpful.
