Q: second demylenating event?

I have Clincal Isolated Syndrome but the past two days have had vertigo and a strange electric shock starting my neck and running down my right side. This only lasts a few seconds. I am wondering if this could be considered a "second" demylenating event to officially diagnose MS? Anyone know? Thanks

Hi KYBlu,

The strange electric shock sensation sounds very much like L'Hermittes Sign.  Sometimes it can be very mild and just cause a little tingling and other times it can be extremely painful for brief seconds.  Alone it would not be another event, but rather it is a sign of some type of damage to the nerves in the cervical spine.

There have been times during which I do not have the L'Hermittes Sign and other signs I do.  Just recently, I had a positive indication with this test and it happened to correlate with a relapse I was having.

Now the vertigo could certainly be indicative of a relapse.  You should call your neurologist to at least report that you are experiencing new symptoms.  He/she will likely want to see you and put you through the full neurological exam.  Depending upon your history, your symptoms, and what your neurologist finds during the exam, he/she might consider further testing to prove whether new demyelination has occurred.

If these symptoms are ones you have had before, like during the first event and if you are currently sick (causing increased body temperature), then you might be experiencing a pseudoexacerbation.  If so, the symptoms would resolve with the infection goes away.  In either case, it's worth a call to your neurologist.

Thank you for this information. I will contact my neuro and see what he says.
