Q: I can't afford my MS meds anymore. What kind of natural remedies should I turn to?

I've heard that there are some health-foods that might help with the symptoms.

Joanie,

There might be a couple of ways to approach your dilemma.  With several reasons a patient may no longer be able to afford MS meds, perhaps the first thing to do is attempt to gain financial assistance for the meds.

Each of the Disease-Modifying Meds has an accompanying assistance program for patients who either have no insurance coverage or really high co-pays.  I've been through this process and it certainly can be daunting.  And sometimes the the requirements make little sense when considering the costs of these meds, but it is worth looking into.

I'd suggest starting with needymeds.com.  If you'd like more guidance, please feel free to contact me.

As far as natural remedies, there are patients who find things such as acupuncture, diet, supplements, excercise, yoga, meditation, etc to be very helpful.

Hi Linda,

Sorry to hear that your husband lost his job.  That's got to put a lot of stress on the family's financial situation without worrying about how to get your medication.

Depending upon which MS drug you use, there are programs available to help.  Each drug company has a different way of offering assistance to patients in need.

Start with this post - Financial Assitance for Your MS Medications - to locate contact information for the program related to your medication.  I hope that it helps and that you can get back on the meds.

Also, contact your county social services department.  They are experts at knowing where to find programs which may be available in your area.
