Q: Do people with MS / caregivers know their EDSS score?

Hello.

I'm designing a study looking at MS caregiver burden in the UK.

Part of the study involves asking the caregiver (or person with MS) the MS person's EDSS score.

Would this be something the caregiver/person with MS would automatically know, or would they need to ask their doctor?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

There is a very complicated calculation with specific criteria which goes into determining the EDSS score.  Typically a patient or caregiver does not know this score, nor does their doctor, off the top of their head.

Once, I even asked my neurologist during an appointment what my score would be and she guestimated it, then looked at her pocket cheat-sheet to narrow it down.

Hi - thank you very much for your response. This is very helpful. It looks like I'll have to work out their EDSS score another way.

Thanks for your help.

Best wishes

Sarah
