Friday, May 24, 2013 Squirly asks

Q: Is perminant numbness common/rare?

Tomorrow I have been numb from the upper waist all the way to my toes for 3 weeks and a day.It isnt subsiding at all or improving. I have been to a neurologist.I was hospitalized for 5 days. Have Steroids by IV 5 times in a week. Is this a pretty bad sign that the numbness isnt going away at all? Is it most likely perminant? I feel I will go crazy to feel like half of my body is dead for eternity. They found a new lesion in my lumbar spine which caused thisI have only recently been officially diagnosed with MS. My first episode was september 2011 in my left eye It went blind for 3 weeks.

Hi Squirly,

Welcome.  I'm so sorry that your question went unanswered for so long.

Sometimes when a relapse occurs and/or there are new lesions, the symptoms can last for any length of time.  I personally have some symptoms which have never really gone away, but they aren't as intense as they once were.

Sometimes it takes weeks for the effect of the IV streroids to really kick in.  Now that it's been a few weeks, has the numbness improved any?  Other times, the steroids may work quickly, but the symptoms still linger for months.  This has happened to me before.

I hope that things get back to normal for you and that the numbness doesn't drive you crazy.  BTW, that's an adorable baby in your profile photo.  Looks very happy.

Be well,

Lisa
