Q: I am a 32 year old female who has been suffering from many unanswered health issues. Is it MS?

I am a 32 year old female who has been suffering from many unanswered health issues.  It went from having a racing heart beat all the time to feeling like my heart was barely beating. Then I had all kinds of other problems that lead me to doing a ton of research on the internet that finally lead to the discovery of my Thyroid condition. Since that discovery I have suffered with many other complication that do not seem to be realted to the thyroid problem.  I have vision problems in my right eye. It feels like it is shaking but the eye doctor says there is nothing wrong. I am dizzy and feel like the world slants at times. I have muscle pain all over but mostely in the back of my neck and down my spine (tailbone area) and my upper chest bone area. My stomach hurts all the time and I am miserable. The doctor's just keep telling me everything is due to my thyroid problem but I disagree.  Right now I have had chest pains that are like nothing i have ever had.  It is right above my brest area and close to my collar bone. It feels like a sharp squeezing pain.  I have ran to the ER so many times becasue of diffrent extreme pains and they never find anything wrong and send me home. I have had so many works ups for my heart and they always come back normal.  Do you think I could have MS.  In April I started having a pins and needles type feeling in my back, left ankel/toes, arms, chest, and my face. Sometimes it even travels to my growing area (SP) and the top part of my butt.  It seems to come and go but this time it feels wrose then the last time. How do I get someone to take me seriously and help me.  I feel like I am loosing my mind.  Oh, I also have heart palpatations all the time. I am scared. Can anyone help?

Hi thewayistheword,

I understand why you are scared because you have so much going on. You know, of course, I cannot tell you if you have MS. There is a long, multi-stepped process to diagnose it. But let's look at some of your problems in relation to MS.

First, your heart -- racing, slowing down, palpitations, pain.  it does seem strange that all of your work ups are normal with all of these problems. It is my understanding MS cannot cause heart problems.

Next, pain -- neck, spine, chest, stomach, assorted. After my research, I hesitate to dismiss any pain in relation to MS. I know there is neck and spine pain specifically mentioned in MS symptoms, but I'm not sure about the others.

Now, vision -- Dizzy, shaking right eye. Dizziness is a symptom of many things. Vertigo is common with MS, but it is usually temporary. Vision problems in general are fraught in MS, and although I have not heard of a shaking eye, it could be a spasm.

The left symptom you mentioned is pins and needles, definitely common in MS.

All of that said, newer symptom cluster does not immediately bring up the idea of MS. Some are possibles, but clearly, some are not. Because of your history, I imagine you are shy of doctors by now, but I'm going to recommend you try it again.

Take your entire list, including your thyroid problems, and ask your doctor -- or a new one -- for a direction for finding an answer. Let the doctor know you have been through many attempts before. Mention your concern with MS, your trips to the ER, and the fact that the symptoms return. This is serious, and I wish you luck.
