Q: MS Pain?

I was diagnosed with ms in 2006. I also was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 02'. I've had various pain with both the thyroid disease and the ms at different times. This isn't so different than the pain I have experienced in the past. However, I'm wondering if it may  be something other than the ms. So far this week I have had some pain on Monday, and it seemed better Tuesday and than got real bad on Wednesday and it still real bad today. It seems to be mostly in my joints and I mean all of my joints; neck, elbows, hips, lower back, knees, ankles and toes and fingers. I don't think I left anything out here. I have had muscle pain and nerve pain with the ms and even fibro type pain with the thyroid disease. I have taken ibuprofen and at 600 mg. and it didn't help at all. I'm on LDN(low dose naltrexone) for the ms and with that drug you cannot have any kind of pain medication. Anyhow, I am just wondering if this is common with ms pain or if it seems that I may have something else causing it.

Hi there

I am so sorry you are experiencing so much pain.

In researching this I am finding that you are not alone.  It seems that others who have MS also experience this type of joint pain.

Read this forum on Psych Central about this symptom.

And here is yet another forum on Daily Strength where MS patients talk about how they cope with this joint pain.

I am no doctor but other things that come to mind may be Fibromyalgia or else Arthritis.  There are many MSers who have more than one auto-immune disease.  I would strongly suggest that you call your doctor to see if he or she can find out what is causing this pain.   There is no need for you to keep suffering.

I hope you feel better soon.  Thank you for your question.

Hi happysoul (like your name btw),

I have MS and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as being hypothyroid.  Yes, it seems that some of us double-dip into the autoimmune disease barrel.

Before being diagnosed with RA, I experienced excruciating pain in many joints.  The conservative treatment recommended for that was Aleve.  Like you, I had tried taking Ibuprofen for the pain, but it did not help.  It was my neurologist who suggested Aleve at double the OTC dose (2 pills, twice daily).  I can't recommend what you should do, just let you know the advice I followed.

I do hope that you find some relief.  Please do keep a record of your symptoms, attempted self-treatment, and the results, to take to your next doctor's appointment.

Hey happy soul! So sorry to hear about the pain. I can only let you know that I have been experiecncing lower back pain this week. I am having a light breakout, and had an X-Ray to find out is DJD. degenerative joint disease/disorder. Which is I guess common now that I am 35yrs old? So yeah, came on when flair up just happened. So I am taking Advil and Vicodin. It is getting better! I hope yours will go away likewise. Take care, hope my little shot-out helped a bit
