Q: Was this an MS attack?

Hello,

I am a 55 year old female and I was diagnosed with MS 17 yrs ago.  Monday I had a mole removed from my lip with local anesthesia.  It was quite painful when the local wore off.  I got home fine but an hour later became dizzy and nauseaus. I was so dizzy that I couldn't lift my head up from the pillow because  it would get worse, I wanted to vomit.  I have had vertigo in the  past, twice.  It happened upon awakening in the morning.  Once the room spun around me and the second time the bed felt like a boat rocking from side to side.  I vomited both times.  This happened years ago. Haven't had another attack of this until now.

This time it was after surgery. (My neurologist always tells me to avoid surgery if possible.  I had to remove the mole because it may be melonoma.)  This time it was  extreme dizziness and weakness with nausea.

I went to the ER and my bloodwork was normal and my EKG was good too.

My neurologist's office thinks it was my MS acting up due to the stress of surgery.  Today is Thursday and I still feel weak and headachy.  Although today I would say I am improving.  The stitches (10 stitches to the lip) are healing.

I'm starting to believe it was an attack.  I also have Relapsing Polychondritis, Raynaud's and Hypothyroid.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello AAA7353:

I too am a 55 y/o female and I was diagnosed 33 years ago in 1976.  I have had quite a few surgeries and my very first MS doc told me to have an IVSM an hour before each BIG surgery (appendix, C-section, hysterectomy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, etc -anything where you are out cold) to ward off MS complications.  It was the best advice I have ever had from the gazillion docs that I have gone through since.

For small surgeries and dental work, I was told to take a prednisone regimen - for five days before, 30 mg for two days, 20 mg for two days and 10 mg for last day. Have the surgery and then do the whole thing over again, 30x2, 20x2 and 10x1.

As long as I have followed this advice I have never had a problem.  Regarding your nausea and dizziness, your doctor should be able to order some Reglan and Antivert to help you along. Regarding steroids, talk to your MS doc and see what he/she thinks you should do before ANY surgery.

Write back and let us know how you are doing,

Anne

Yes, I would say your body had some type of Stress Reaction to the lip surgery.  Maybe not an MS attack, but forget about labelling it, just rest & help your body to heal from the trauma. Our bodies have different reactions to different events & so we must go thru weird body reactions as calmly as possible, so as not to cause more stress.  Take care.
