Hi Mattflow,

The topic of artificial sweeteners and MS symptoms is somewhat controversial.  Some folks swear that there is a connection and others may point out that there is a lack of evidence to prove such.  I haven't noticed a connection personally but that doesn't mean that your body couldn't be sensitive enough to respond to the artificial sweetener with increased MS symptoms.  So I'd say that it is definitely possible.

Absolutely Aspartame CAN and DOES mimic MS!

It can cause Lou Gerhig's Disease: http://www.alsforums.com/forum/general-discussion-about-als-mnd/57-how-aspartame-causes-lou-gehrigs.html

It, like white flour (which is also a neurotoxin), is terrible for those with an MS diagnosis.

I used to have botox injections in my legs due to muscle spasticity.  Without the botox, it was like having 9 charlie horses at once, constantly, in my legs.  I decided to stop drinking producs with asparatame after geting a survey from a teaching hospital about how foods effect your MS.  It got me to thinking that the only change I had made in my diet since my diagnosis was the diet drinks.  I used to get the botox injections every 3 months.  When I stopped drinking the diet drinks I had a month to go before my next set of injection (which, by the way, are not pleasant).  I still had some spacticity in my legs when it was time tio get the botox, but not bad enough for botox.  One month late, the spacticity was gone.

Mattflow,

I discontinued all products containing any "fake" sweeteners (such as aspartame) when I was pregnant 20 years ago.  They contain so many ingredients that are unfamiliar and I don't know what they are.  Aspartame is a food additive and something I didn't want to put in my body.

In the Paleo Diet, Dr. Terry Wahl's claims she reversed her MS by following the diet.  She claims, " Artificial sweeteners like aspartame should be avoided at all cost, as aspartame toxicity often reveals itself through central nervous system disorders and compromised immunity, and can mimic the symptoms of and/or worsen several diseases, including MS."

In my experience, I avoid anything with any artificial sweeteners.  I do not drink any soda, let alone diet soda.  I drink water, coffee and tea, and once in a while cranberry juice for its known helpful properties against urinary tract infections.

I hope this helps.  Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Best in health,

Cathy
