Betaferon most effective against MS if given early: study
(Reuters) UPDATED 2008-09-20
Drugmaker Bayer, the maker of Betaferon, is reporting that a recent clinical trial has found the drug to be more effective in treating multiple sclerosis (MS) when it is given at the first sign of the disease than if treatment is delayed. In the trial, researchers found that early use of Betaferon delayed the onset of definite MS by 37 percent or 45 percent over a five-year period (depending which of two commonly used definitions of MS was used) when compared to a placebo. The lead investigator says these results suggest that no time should be wasted after the first MS attack because some of the early nerve damage may not be able to be repaired by later treatment. Betaferon is known as Betaseron in the United States and Canada.
