Scientists link Epstein-Barr virus to MS
(The Australian) UPDATED 2008-11-20
Scientists in Australia have discovered that people who have multiple sclerosis (MS) cannot properly control levels of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a virus that causes glandular fever. Though about 90 percent of the general population has the EBV virus, most people's immune systems keeps its levels in check. But in a new study, researchers found that the immune systems of MS patients are less effective at killing EBV-infected cells. They also found that the weaker a person's immune system at fighting these infected cells, the younger he or she develops MS. Scientists say this discovery may one day help them to develop a vaccine for MS.
