Study: Only half of MS patients respond to interferon

Treating multiple sclerosis (MS) with the drug interferon only works in about half of patients who suffer from the disease, new research suggests. In the new study, scientists looked at brains scans of 15 MS patients who were given interferon every other day for nine months. Of these patients, only eight seemed to respond to the interferon treatment, showing a 60 percent reduction in their MS-related brain lesions. The other patients had varying degrees of reaction to the drug. Experts say this finding provides further evidence that MS is not just one disease, but rather a variety of diseases that doctors place under the umbrella of MS.  Read full story >
