10th Tysabri-related brain inflammation case reported

Drugmaker Biogen Idec Inc. is reporting a tenth case of a potentially lethal form of brain inflammation in a user of its drug Tysabri. Company officials confirmed the presence of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in a patient who had been using Tysabri for 30 months. Tysabri was pulled from the market in 2005 because of concerns about PML, and sales resumed in July 2006 with restrictions and a monitoring program. The drug is approved to treat both multiple sclerosis (MS) and Crohn's disease, but all 10 cases of PML have been in patients with MS.
