New MS drug 'fast-tracked' by FDA
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted its fast-track designation to a new medication to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). The drug currently is referred to as a PEGylated interferon beta-1a, or BIIB017, and is currently entering Phase III clinical trials. The FDA's fast-track designation is "designed to expedite the review of new drugs that are intended to treat serious or life-threatening conditions and demonstrate the potential to address unmet medical needs." The Phase III clinical is also currently recruiting patients.
