Mayo Clinic neurologist says many MS patients misdiagnosed

According to Mayo Clinic neurologist Sean Pittock, thousands of people with Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) are being misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis. NMO is a rare disease that attacks the optic nerves and spinal cord, and it can cause vision loss, paralysis of the arms and legs, vomiting, hiccups, and sensory disturbances. Dr. Pittock says that a number of patients whose bloodwork is sent to the Mayo Clinic and who have previously been diagnosed with MS are found to have NMO-IgG--a genetic marker of NMO.
