According to new studies, two drugs have shown promise in becoming the first pill-form medications for relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). In one study, the medicine fingolimod was effective at preventing MS relapse compared to a placebo, and it performed better than the standard intravenous treatment of beta interferon in a second study. Another drug, called cladribine, also outperformed a placebo drug in preventing relapse in MS patients in other clinical studies. But researchers also found that both drugs had the potential for serious side effects, including cancers and serious infections, some of which caused death.
