Exercise May Protect Brains of MS Patients

A new study has found that exercise appears to have a protective effect on the brains of people who have multiple sclerosis (MS). For the study, scientists looked at the fitness levels, cognitive functions, and brain structure changes of 21 women with MS. They found that those who were classified as "highly fit" performed much better on cognitive tests than patients who were less fit. The MRI scans also showed that fit patients had more gray volume in their brains, which is linked to brain processing skills. Highly fit patients also showed less damage in parts of the brain where MS-related deterioration occurs, the scientists found.
