As a private music teacher to children of varying ages, it is not unusual to have students who are Girl Scouts. In fact, I don’t think that I’ve had a year where there wasn’t at least one Girl Scout among my young piano or horn students.
For several years, I would be approached about ordering cookies for myself. It’s hard to turn down a kid with an order form. But for the last few years, I have one family who has made it a point to give me a box or two of my favorite cookies. The first year it was a complete surprise. More recently I’m asked in advance what I would like.
This year when I was called about my favorites, I had mixed feelings. I mean, I am trying to eat better and focus on getting healthier. I have officially lost 10 pounds. Where do Girl Scout cookies fit into my journey?
Deciding to go with the household favorites, I suggested Thin Mints and Samoas. My roommate and I are ones who can each eat half a role of Thin Mints in one seating without any trouble whatsoever. But it really isn’t a good idea to gorge that way.
Well, the cookies arrived last night at a horn lesson. They were a little later than usual because of the tremendous snowstorms we had recently. Until one week ago, I couldn’t leave my house it was still that bad. Girl Scout cookie trucks were held up as well.
Last night I decided that I wanted to have some Samoas. I made sure that I found the appropriate nutritional information in my “Lose it!” app to document the snack.
I ate one cookie... which was pretty darn good.
One serving includes two cookies. So I slowly ate another.
Then this is where it gets interesting. I stopped.
I actually stopped after two Samoas and was completely satisfied.
I’m pretty sure that my tastebuds are changing and that I am becoming more sensitive to sugars. I no longer enjoy the taste of Diet Pepsi and have been drinking tea instead. Full fat versions of salad dressing are simply gross.
My habits are changing and for the better!!
Tonight after dinner, I might have another Samoa....or I might save them for when I really wish to have a treat. I just better let my roommate know that she can have the Thin Mints if she keeps her mitts off MY Samoas. I’m not so sure I could stop after two Thin Mints so I won’t even try right now.

UPDATE:
I lasted about three days eating just 2 Samoas each evening as a treat. My roommate had a few and then I ate 3 one night and another 3 the next. Bingo, after 15 cookies the box was empty!!
It seems that I better not let anymore boxes of cookies into this house. Too much of a temptation, lol.
