No more are grains at the center of my bariatric life. But oy veh, do I tire of eggs every day. So here is a weeks-worth of my favorite recipes to serve up breakfast with eggs in new tasty ways and using grain-free replacements for pancakes, and cereal, and waffles... oh my!
Just a friendly reminder from me to you: Grains have no place in a bariatric diet. According to the pouch rules, the ideal bariatric meal consists of the following:
- ½ of the meal is low fat protein,
- ¼ is raw or lightly cooked low starch vegetables, and
- ¼ is raw fruit
- This type of meal will stay in the pouch a long time and maintain satiety.
It can be quite a challenge to shift away from grains and starchy carbs like potatoes at the breakfast meal. I was glad when I learned about nut flours, such as almond flour and coconut flour, and began experimenting with them in my “bariatric lab” (aka kitchen).
Day 1: Ricotta Protein Pancakes
My first successful attempt has become a breakfast recipe favorite in the MBL house – even with dear chubby hubby! Simply called Ricotta Protein Pancakes, these are higher protein lower carbohydrate pancakes that are perfect for bariatric patients who want to sustain their weight loss long-term. Serve them alongside free-range turkey sausage to up the protein – or wrap a sausage in a pancake to make a pig in a blanket -- and add fresh fruit.
Day 2: Chocolate Hazelnut Coffee Frappe
If I do say so myself, this breakfast recipe is another success from my Bariatric Lab. It is perfect for mornings when I am on-the-go and need a breakfast that is quick and easy to make and travels well.

Day 3: Orange Creamsicle Protein Shake
Another tasty grab-and-go protein breakfast shake is my Orange Creamsicle Protein Shake. It is a refreshing alternative to vanilla and chocolate protein shakes, and especially nice for Summer.

Day 4: Egg and Pesto-Stuffed Tomatoes
A new way to serve up eggs on a weekend morning (this one takes a bit longer, 15 minutes prep time and twenty minutes in the oven) is Egg and Pesto Stuffed Tomatoes. The recipe is borrowed from the Paleo Diet website (paleodietlifestyle.com) with a few modifications of my own.

I am sharing my wonderful recipe make-overs with you that have helped me to be successful in maintaining my weight loss from bariatric surgery in 2003. These include delicious protein shakes - some of which taste even better than the delicious fat and sugar-laden Frappucinos at Starbucks, protein bars that are far more healthy and affordable than those you buy online/in-store, and awesome recipe-makeovers of foods you love but are no longer part of a bariatric life food plan.
Simple use the search bar in obesity, located in the top right of this page, and type in the words "bariatric recipe." My recipes should pop to the top of your results list!
