Celebrities Who Have Had Weight Loss Surgery
I’m not sure how I feel about the whole celebrity watch thing. Reality
shows have made it possible for me to know more about the Kardashians
than I need to know. And before that it was the Osbournes and the Hiltons.
I get the attraction to celebrities, but the dogged obsession of it all
is a bit unnerving. Every celebrity action is not newsworthy and some
celebrity behaviors that make the news are … well, let’s call them
On the other hand, a spotlight on our television and big
screen stars is usually okay and sometimes helpful. A case in point
would be those celebrities who have had weight-loss surgery. Their high
profile transition at least gives a visual for what is possible for
those who struggle with obesity. The latest to step forward is Rosie
After helping a woman get out of her car in the summer of 2012, Rosie
O’Donnell began experiencing body aches, which she attributed to
overexertion. The pain did not subside though, and O’Donnell began to
feel clammy. Her temperature elevated and she finally vomited. Rosie
O’Donnell was having a heat attack. An EKG would reveal that she had 99% artery blockage.
Having survived what her doctors called a widow maker heart attack,
O’Donnell began eating a healthier diet and incorporated more physical
activity into her daily agenda. Despite the changes, her efforts to lose
weight were not working.
While speaking at a recent luncheon for the American Heart Association,
O’Donnell shared that she has had gastric sleeve surgery to help improve
her health. Since the surgery in July of 2013, her body mass index has
dropped to just below the level for obesity and her weight has gone
down from 230 to 190 pounds.
O’Donnell states that she had the procedure because she feared for her
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery is the removal of part of the stomach to create a
tube-shaped stomach or sleeve. A bariatric surgeon will make several
small incisions in the abdomen. The surgery takes about one hour to
perform and is irreversible.
The reduced size of the stomach restricts the amount of food that can be
eaten at one time and makes a person feel full quickly. The weight loss
is slower than gastric bypass surgery, but a patient can anticipate a
loss of 50 to 80 percent of excess body weight within 12 months.
Other Celebrities Who Have Had Weight Loss Surgery
Rosie O’Donnell is hardly the first high profile entertainer to have
weight loss surgery. Others include Carnie Wilson, Roseanne Barr, Sharon
Osbourne, and Al Roker to name but a few.
Mr. Roker stands out for me for personal reasons.
When I first saw his transformation, I contacted him via e-mail to
congratulate him and let him know that he had inspired me to pursue my
own weight loss surgery. He e-mailed a return offering his own
congratulations and added that he hoped I would get all that I wanted.
Thanks, Al Roker. Since I finally had plastic surgery after weight loss surgery, I did get all that I wanted.
