  • The Proceed with Caution Approach to Juice Cleansing

    As with most things, there are pros and cons to juice cleansing. There are those who endorse the process and those who do not. This is as it should be, good old checks and balances. Before anyone plunges into a liquid diet for what could be weeks, it might be best to research and consider before you sign on the dotted line. As a matter of fact, consulting your physician sounds about right!  


    What is Juice Cleansing?

    Juice cleansing is a process where a person will limit her diet to only fresh juices, fresh vegetables, and water for a period of days to weeks. Fresh made juice is all that is recommended, so forget about store bought orange juice.

    You can buy juices from a manufacturer of juice cleanse products or you can make your own drinks at home. Packaged juices go through a pasteurization process that kills pathogens, so if you make your own juices in the comfort of your kitchen make only enough for a single serving. This eliminates the chance for organisms to develop. In addition, scrub all the veggies and fruits clean.


    Getting Started

    Not so fast. Before we commit to anything, let's pause a minute. Juice cleanses are often done for weight loss. Fair enough. We all want to take off a few pounds now and again, and juice can be a great addition to any diet plan but extreme measures may not be healthy and even harmful.


    A juice cleanse for a few days as a diet starter can help take off a few pounds without fatigue and too much hunger. Anything more than one week should be avoided. Such cleanses are too restrictive and can deplete your body of nutrients.

    Fruits and vegetables have plenty of nutrients but juicing often removes the skin and seeds where the nutrients are concentrated. This doesn't leave much fiber, and a lack of fiber results in hunger.   


    Juices also lack the protein and fat that your body needs. Protein is important for healthy muscle tissue where the business of burning calories and fat takes place. Fat is important for proper absorption of vitamins.


    Juice cleansing can be a useful tool but it is not a sound approach for taking off a lot of weight in a healthy way.


    Getting Started Again

    Perhaps the best reason for juice cleansing is to use it as a pathway for a more healthy lifestyle. Lori Kenyon Farley, founder of Ritual Wellness, maintains that if your focus is good and you view the process as a pathway, you will have a natural craving for healthy food once the cleanse is complete. Viewing the cleanse as a conduit for a more healthy lifestyle will help in making better food choices.    


    Juice cleanses have also begun to incorporate more foods besides vegetable juices into the program. Nut milks for protein have been added as well as raw salad or raw oatmeal. These modified cleanses improve the health profile by providing more nutrients and proteins although most cleanses still center around juices.
