At Fancy Food Show 2013 Some Tasty, Healthy Finds

The HealthGal Health Guide
  • There’s nothing like the Fancy Food Show, where pavilions at the chosen convention center display delectable products from cities and countries near and far.  Some nations take over sections of the pavilions with country banners proudly displayed.  There’s also a designated area where you can find newly launching innovative foods.  Food trends happen here.  Among the cheeses and the chocolates and the pastas and ice creams and other food categories, I marched myself, on the hunt for tasty, healthy finds – which is not to say that I didn’t treat myself to some bites of rather decadent foods…..C’mon, this is a unique once-every-few-years’ experience in New York City.  Still, I was choosy – mindful eating has to be part of the equation, especially at a food show that spans three days.

So what were my favorite finds?  Here’s a rundown of some new products, and some food items that have been out for a while, but were new to me:

Citriburst Finger Limes are strange–looking elongated, lime fruits (ranging in color from purple to green) that when cut in half, have little “pearls” inside, rather than the traditional citrus sections.  You can squeeze out the pearls and they literally pop in your mouth as you chew them gently, releasing tart lime juice.  As someone who is always looking for tasty and creative ways to add flavor without the use of sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, a refreshing and unique lime is just what the chef ordered.  Consider using these pearls to garnish dishes or to add unique taste and texture to a recipe.  The Citriburst grower assured me that the website is being updated and re-launched in August, with more recipe ideas and photos.  In the meantime, you can order these treats, which are packed 7-10 in a clear cellophane bag, for about $4.99 plus shipping.  Refrigerate immediately and take note that the season lasts from the middle of August through December, and regardless of color, they are good to use until they begin to soften, indicating over-ripe.  A store locator can tell you if they’re available in your neighborhood.

Chobani has become a Greek yogurt giant in the food sector and a recent rollout of Chobani Flip Greek Yogurt Blueberry Power combines the creamy blueberry non-fat yogurt with a “flip in” of crushed walnuts, hemp seeds and chia, so you get the added boost of protein and healthy fats in your mini meal.  I love the convenience of this tasty balanced offering.  There are 3 other choices, with low fat yogurt and different mix ins and also a higher calorie count.  The website offers nutrition information as well as coupons and some yogurt recipe ideas.

The Republic of Tea offered a refreshing new Hibiscus Watermelon tea, excellent hot or cold.  I’m a big fan of teas since consumers drink way too many liquid calories.  Explore the world of Republic Teas and try my favorites which include: Pineapple Lychee Hibiscus, Vanilla Apple Hibiscus and Coconut Hibiscus.  You’ll find tea recipes, health benefits of tea and how to brew a delicious cup of tea on their website.

Numi Organic Tea offered a new line of savory teas that invoked memories of the warm, soothing broths my mom used to make during the cold winters of the northeast.  It’s a new concept and they call it not quite a soup.  I tasted the entire line of these unique teas.  My favorites were Tomato Mint, Carrot Curry, Beet Cabbage and Fennel Spice.  There’s also Spinach Chive and Broccoli Cilantro.  If you embrace “trying new things,” you won’t be disappointed.  I think these can be especially helpful to a dieter who needs a comforting beverage that is calorie free!!

    Some other special mentions:

Bliss Soft Dried Fruits – It’s just fruit and water and though I prefer eating a whole fresh fruit, these are great for on-the-go snacks, as long as you watch portion sizes, and they're also great as a mix in for yogurt or homemade trail mix.

Hope Hummus offers organic single-serve packs of one of my favorite foods.  Swapping out creamy dips and high sugar, fat condiments for hummus is a healthy habit.  This Boulder, Colorado based company offers single serve packs in a variety of flavors and they also have options like avocado hummus, a blend.  It’s gluten free, kosher and vegan and the website has a store locator.

Garden Lites Veggie Muffins  – I especially love the Zucchini Chocolate, though there are 3 other delicious flavors. It’s a portion sized, moist muffin with good taste and a nice dose of fiber.
