Are you precious?
If I had asked you that question about 6 months ago, you'd think I meant, "Am I special, unique, something to cherish?" Now, that question has a second possible meaning, "Am I like that girl in the movie who is obese...invisible.... trapped in a horrible existence?"&n...

I went to see "Precious" on Sunday night here in Washington D.C. I walked out of the theater quite literally not knowing what to think or how to react to the movie. As a white, middle-class, Midwestern, fit, 23-year-old woman; there wasn't a whole lot of Precious' story that I could relate too. However, I was deeply moved by her story and surprised by the range of strong emotions the movie inspired within me. One moment I was furious at Precious' inability to stand up for herself, then I was disgusted by her mother, then repulsed by the family's living conditions, then totally inspired by Ms. Rain.
But this isn't a movie review...the point is, our personal struggles, be they with relationships, jobs, or weight, are not only our own. Precious was in the most dire straits imaginable, but still managed to find invaluable support from her teachers, classmates and social worker that were instrumental (along with her determination) that lifted her out of her circumstances and toward (we hope) a better life.
She was not alone and you are not alone. Seek out the support you need and results will follow.
