Congratulations on your article. As I was reading it I thought it was the story of my life. What do you do in situations as those you described? I usually don't go to parties but if I do I spend the whole evening away from the table & when I go home I eat myself silly. Afterwards I feel sick with myself & totaly discusted by my lack of control. Keep up with the good work. I will look forward to your next article.

The answer for each individual person probably differs but here are some different experiments-

1- Why not allow yourself 2 or 3 forkfuls of say 2 desserts - see how it feels to have a controlled dessert experience.  When you go home steer clear of the kitchen - go immediately to brush your teeth.  if you feel a binge coming on - maybe try some hot tea.  See if allowing yourself that dessert helps to avoid a binge.

2- Scenario 2 is the same but if you really feel a binge coming on - call someone - preset the arrangement so they accept your call - the idea is to put up a roadblock and gather your emotions so you can figure out "why" you need to binge after allowing yourself the small serving of dessert.  You can also try having o full serving of dessert since the calories will never compare to a binge - so you're way ahead of the game if you just enjoy that one dessert.

I will tell you that therapy does help and it in no way indicates your inability to handle the situation - on the contrary - it means you are being proactive.

Good luck
