I have had problems with anxiety for a number of years and I believe that they initially stemmed from certain high stress events that took place in my life. However, my poor eating habits definitely exacerbated my anxiety symptoms and for the past few years I have suffered full blown panic attacks.
In the book Beat Sugar Addiction Now!, I have found a lot of information related to overcoming anxiety. Some of the advice is based on what I need to eat, but there are also natural remedies and recommendations of effective prescription drugs.
The book does a good job explaining how sugar is related to stress and anxiety. When your blood sugar level drops, your brain goes into fight or flight mode and you can have a panic attack. If you have a bad cycle going with sugar, then your blood sugar level will be dropping as you crash down after your sugar high and then you will just feel terrible. I always thought I felt stressed out after eating junk because I knew it was bad for me and I was beating myself up over not having any self control. That may be a part of it, but now I know that there is a physiological component as well.
This book has been instrumental in helping me see that I can actually be free of my panic and anxiety if I take nutrition seriously and focus on healing myself and utilizing better self care skills. I am excited to show it to my therapist and see what we can do to get me back on the right track soon!
Thanks for the really simple and straightforward suggestions for battling this!
