Healthy Fat?

  • A new study says that the extra pounds you may be carrying may not have an effect on your heart.

Bloomberg news is reporting that a study from the Archives of Internal Medicine has proven that there are different types of fat - some worse than others.

Researchers believe one in three obese Americans have a healthy heart. Of the more than 5,000 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, nearly 32 percent were found to be metabolically healthy. This percentile had healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar and insulin resistance.

The "benign" type of fat has no early signs of heart disease associated with it, according to the study.

Patients with this type of fat can be identified by taking an insulin test, because the benign fat has a normal reaction to insulin.

However, this is not a "Get out of Jail Free" card for those who are overweight.

Researchers said that although obesity may not have a direct affect on the heart, you are still healthier if you are thinner and in shape.
