If you are willing to be physically active daily (30-45 minutes of exercise) then i'd start by trying a balanced diet with about 1800-2000 calories.  If you are unwilling to eexercise - i'd target 1600-1800 calories and see if this slowly nudges weight off.

Multiply the goal weight by 17, this will give you an idea how many calories you need for maintaining the goal. Combine this with exercise and the results will happen faster, and healthier. During the diet, the body will resist, and maintain the weight by shuting down in a fashion, it is trying to protect you from starving to death. This lack of weight loss will last for days, weeks, or months. Keep on keeping on, the excess weight will go away. Not to worry, it is our natural defense. Moderate exercise, like walking for 90 minutes, 3 times a week will have great results. Weight lifting and other exercise will help, but the walking is found to be more do-able, and it's a great time for getting to know the neighbors. Now keep on track with Medical advice from you Doctor who knows you and your family history. Get in touch with local diet groups, weekly meetings are great and tedious at the same time. Groups like TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, are great, and various groups are meeting in the community. My Mom has had great luck with them for over 20 years now, She's with the KOPS, Keep Off Pounds Sensibly. Good luck, I am down from 240 lbs. and at 202 for about 6 months now, lots of oatmeal is my filler...
