If you are morbidly obese or have a BMI over 40, you should be able to petition your insurance company (with your doctor as advocate) for coverage of this surgery, especially if you have strong risk factors for disease or clear disease present.

If you have no coverage, you might present to some university teaching hospitals whose surgical residents need surgical practice (the attendings will monitor the surgery) but you will still have to pay for hospital stay and anesthesia and any other outside costs.

I am not familiar with any free gastric bypass surgery and though your BMI is a bit over 30 - and clearly you are carrying substantial extra weight - I would suggest finding the root cause of your overeating.  If it's emotional - seek counseling from a psychologist who specialies in obesity and eating issues.  Walking daily is free and actually helps you to channel emotional feelings into exercise instead of eating.  There are now free exercise programs and web programs so again, no cost involved if you have a computer.  Eating education through again the internet or from books, I wrote Fat families Thin Families can offer you solid and healthy approaches to eating.  At the end of the day - you need to take ownership of this health situation, just like we take ownership of our finances and other "life necessities."  Be kind to yourself and change one habit at a time but get support and help.  An organization like Weight Watchers or Overeaters Anonymous might help as well.

I am sorry that you feel so defeated and frustrated - obesity and the whole weight issue is very daunting.  that being said - everyone cannot afford the surgical option and unless you totally change how you eat-why you eat- temptations in your kitchen and pantry-your emotional connection to food- you would not be a successful candidate for either lap band or gastric bypass.  Though both have high failure rates because you can "undo the surgery" by overeating - which is what gets you obese in the first place.  You may have a slow metabolism and a genetic predisposition to weight gain - but eating puts the weight on and lack of movement compounds the problem.  I worked with several 500 plus pound people and over 2-3 yrs they lost more than 50% of their weight by slowly modifying what they eat- by beginning a walking program-by getting therapy for their food issues.  Believe in yourself and get help-it is doable.

I am 33 years old.  I am 5' 2-1/2" tall.  I weigh 370 lbs.  I have hypothyroidism (treated by levothyroxin).  I have sleep apnea (I use a CPAP).  I have a fibroid tumor.  I have arthritis in my lower back.  My blood pressure is great, my cholesterol is fine.  I do not have diabetes.  I am fairly active - I live in the country on a farm and take care of cattle, chickens, mow and weed eat the inner yard (that is about an acre).  I like to go fishing and boating.  I work full time.  I clean house, do laundry.  Walk every day - probably an average of 2 hours per day between work related, farm related and leisure related exercise.

I have literally tried everything.  I joined a hospital health club and did water aerobics as well as used some of their land machines (low impact as I have arthritis in my lower back).  I went to the health club and saw my physiologist everyday for 2 hours a day.  I saw a dietician once a month.  I provided her with spreadsheets on everything I ate on a daily basis.  The exercise physiologist said that I was one of her most dedicated patients.  The dietician said she'd never had a patient so throrough and so serious about losing weight.  I stuck with it - I cried, I hurt, I pushed through it.  In 5 months I lost 15 pounds.  In the 6th month I gained back 5 pounds - although nothing, absolutely nothing had changed.

The physiologist and dietician re-evaluated the situation, compared notes... they both recommended gastric bypass because they said for whatever reason my body is fighting itself.  No one seems to know why I don't seem to be able to lose weight - no matter what I do.

I believe there are other people out there who are like me - I know I can't be a freak.  But yet - where's the help we need?  Tied up in insurance claims and a procedure that on average costs more than my car did brand new.

Becky there are others like you out there...I happen to one of them.  No matter what I do I can not lose weight.  I love to go walking and I eat fairly healthy.  I don't overeat...in fact if anything I under eat (only one meal per day)

not all of us overeat or have major issues with food.  I want the surgery because I want to be able to exercise and walk and not get out of breath or stop becuase my calves and back hurt. I also just want to live healthier and look healthier.  I am almost 30 and I have never been asked out on a date.  I always have gone on the "friend" dates.

Anyone know where someone who is unemployed and has no insurance can get the surgery and not have to pay for it...or minimal payment.

Innocent  Hello there.  Been There Girl here.

Ok.  You know that at your height 370 pounds is a dangerous place

to be?  I tried the exercise route.  But - I still ate like I wanted to.  Hense no weight loss.

My suggestion to you, is to write down ALL you eat.  Make a chart

and list them.  Even the snacks.  Try and loose the pop and cut down on chocolate.  Give yourself a treat 2 or 3 times a week so

you do not feel deprived.  Then the devil will entise you to binge -

that sucker will try all he has to try & make you sad and upset.

Are you a believer in Jesus Christ? If not, do you want to be?  I

can help you there.  I have been Born Again since 1975.  I do not

claim to be a miracle worker - I leave that to God!  But we can

pray for each other and support each other and make it work!

I do not believe your body is fighting itself.  That is Doctor talk.

We KNOW who is doing this. It is a Spiritual battle.  The sooner

you know this the faster you can solve this.  WITHOUT BYPASS

SURGERY!  I was told, at 328 lbs., that I would die if I had the

surgery!  I like to eat. But I went to man - not to God for answers

and that just did me in.  Once I realized that I needed His help,

went to Him and had a heart to heart talk, I knew my days of

being fat were numbered.

You are not a freak.  You are a child of God and He makes no junk

so, know this - He Loves You!  And no matter what He is on your

side.  You have to submit to Him.  Walk - that will help.  if you

want to exercise do so.  I did not.  I have too many physical stuff

wrong with me.  I did have the "Apron" that most overweight

peole have.  It hung past my thighs.   It causes yeast infections &

all kinds of crap.  I had to powder myself and wear cotton strips

across my abdomen so that the skin would not touch the skin.

Because once it does You pull it apart - it bleeds and that is not

good.  I went out on a limb - I signed a form that said if I have

the pannus (mini abdomiplasty) removed it would be costly.  and I

would have to pay for it.  I signed it - but I knew God was behind

me - I went to a plastic surgeon and he had reservations - but

I had no open sores, no problems of any kind!  He was shocked!

And then - the bill came?  $39,219.00!  Whoa!  Guess what?

I DID NOT PAY ONE CENT!  GOD TOOK CARE OF IT ALL!

You sometimes have to go out on a limb - when you do, God will

meet you there and you rest in His arms.  Innocent

Now, I do not know how it is for you - but if they are suggesting

Gastric Bypass - I am willing to bet they would go for something

else.  There are answers out there.  You just have to know how to

look.  Ask God to help you.

I had my Apron removed - I lost 15 pounds!  I no longer have to

powder myself and I am FREE for the 1st time in 15 yrs.  Praise

the Lord!  You go to Him and let Him hear your story.  He knows

it - He wants you to humble yourself before Him - then - watch

Him pull it all together for you!  Trust Him. What do you have

to loose?  370 pounds?  Watch the weight fall off you.  It has

taken me 3 years to loose my weight.  I did it the healthy way.

The God way.

Blessings to you!

You have to  be strong.  Do you have an Apron that hangs from your waist?  I did

and I hung down past the thighs.  They found a hernia and so with that they were

able to do the surgery - a pandectomy.  It is not a tummy tuck.  Look it up at

Web Md.  You should see it there.

Sad to say, but no, there is no "Free" surgery.  However,  You can go Medicare

& fight to get your case paid.  I saw 4 doctors and I have a large roll of fat

called the "Pannus"  and I am having it surgically removed.   I am having it done

next month.  You cannot go to Medicare until you have had the surgery.

So,  I got 2 letters from the Doctors who have been taking care of me all this

time, so that they know this condition can be taken care of with the surgery.

I lost my weight (70 pounds) over a 2 year period.   I now have a roll that

they call the "Apron"   And it is estimated that it weighs 30-40 pounds.

It is a pain in the butt.

As far as gastric bypass - you have to be extremely overweight - at least

400 pounds or more to even be considered.  It is risky - my cousin had it

and she developed bleeding ulcers - throwing up blood and got deathly sick.

I cannot say anything about the Lap Band surgery.  But  my cousin has to

take vitamin B daily and other stuff cause she can only eat so much or she

throws it all up!  I will not live like that!   I like to eat.  I just ate the

wrong things!   You have to be willing to give up all the junk food,  believe it

or not, I gave up pop and the 1st month I lost 10 pounds!!  What a shock!

I eat chocolate as a treat every so often as I can.  I depend upon God Almighty

to help me stay within my limits.  And believe me, once you commit to Him -

there is not any room to screw up!   The thing is you HAVE TO BE SERIOUS

and have a plan.   If you are willing to try another way of eating I am very

convinced you can loose the weight.   Smile

I just read what you wrote to the public and I like what you had to say. My question to you is do you have a diet menu that you go by everyday or do you just take it day by day. I am a very active plus size woman as well and I know that my down fall is junk food it is my the devil for me. I have zero will power when it comes to that kind of food. So if you have any suggestion about how to kick the junk food habit please feel inlighten me. Please keep up the good work with your changing of eating habit and I hope you reach whatever goal you are striving for.

This is for Truth:

Hi, I am going to tell you how this all began.  September 26, 2006.  I weighed 328 pounds.  I had swollen legs and a staph infection on the left one, which causes my leg

to be a brown color.  With my milky white skin I hate it - sticks out.  I do not wear a

thing but pants.  As I sat there crying - I would get visitors and "their" advice.  I choose not to listen.  I finally came home and  I cried for days, till I finally decided to

give God a try.  I am a Christian & I should have went to Him in the 1st place.  Anyway,   I went to the park to talk to Him.  And I wrote down all the crap I had been

eating.  Susie Q's?  the 2 cakes?  have over 600 grams of salt!  I ate 1 everyday and I

was so full of water!  I had to get rid of it - now!  So I said there praying and I told

God I had to change or die.  I love chocolate, chips & dips,  pastries, etc.  I finally

told Him that if He would help me control my willpower and help me loose weight - I

would do as He said.  I made a list of the foods.  To say the least I was shocked!  So

I told Him that He (God) had to take over - I was weak, He is strong so I "gave it over"

to Him.  My only request was that if I wanted chocolate - within reason I could have it.  and pop - I loved my coke.  Well - you can't go back on your word with God!  At

1st things went ok - then all the stuff I craved?  I lost the craving!  I would eat what

I wanted and true to His word, God made me sick on the food I craved.  I gave up alot.  chips & dip, ice cream, candy (I got the diarhrea!)  I really got sick and I told him that I would not whine if He kept me from getting too sick.  I stopped drinking coke after I drank it and it went down my throat and burned like fire!  with chocolate,

I could have the bigger bars, but if God felt it was too much - I got the runs again!

I gave up pop one month?  I lost 10 pounds!  I do not follow a diet, but I am learning

to eat better.  I like fruit  For me, I can eat all the fruit I want & you have to follow

your heart.  You know what to eat &  if you do not - go get a diet from your doctor -

& go to God and ask Him what He thinks!  He will surprise you!  You will not want all

that old crap anymore - your willingness to please God will carry you through it all!

It has been 3 years now - I have lost 93 pounds and I have lost 10 pant sizes and

top sizes as well.  I had to spend money to get some dress clothes and make sure they fit me!  (now I have a $800 bill at Catherines!)  But they have the best clothes!

and if you get a sale?  You can make a killing!  God reminds you that your body is His

Temple - you work with Him and He will work with you.  As far as my "Apron" the Pannus?  I had it cut off in February!  I no longer have the apron and my whole outlook

is so different!  No more open sores, I sweat less,  I gave up salt.    God will give you

a whole new way of eating.   I started out at 328 and now? 235 - 93 pounds.  So if

anything I believe you can do it too!  No surgery untill your pannus hangs down below

your thighs like mine did.  I also developed a hiatal hernia - that helped me get that

15 pounds of extra fat off my waist.  It has been a new time in my life.  I feel pretty

now instead of a fat pig.  You need to get rid of that fat around your middle -  I kept

getting yeast infections in there and I had to wear cotton cloths in there to soak up

the moisture.  It has NOT been easy - my surgery - are you ready?  Cost  $39,912.00!

and I did NOT pay one cent on it - God took care of it.  You have to get out of your

comfort zone.  Be strong. Do you really need all those chips? ice cream?  think about

what you crave the most and go from there.  There is no "Free Surgery"  if you think

man's thoughts.  The devil is a liar!  I was told if I went through gastric by pass surgery I would die on the table.   Choose Life!  Choose God!  He will be with you all

the way.  If He can do it for me - he can do it for you!  By the way, my 1st goal is

to loose 100 pounds.  Then God has told me I must go infront of the church and give

my testimony.  My goal is to loose another 35 pounds - I will be 200 - I am tall, so I

do not look my size.  But God tells us in the Scriptures that if we acknowledge Him

before men, He will acknowledge me before His Father.  It is in the New Testament.

I want to hear "I know you" at the last day and I stand before Him.

So good luck, keep me up to speed. and may God bless you!   Smile

Let me first say congradulation on your weight lossSmile I want to say thank you for the advice that you wrote to me. I am going to take the advice that you have given me and try GOD I to believe in the master and just as youself I should have went to him first, but I was trying to find a quit way to lose weight and if I stay true to me there is not quick way to lose weight. I will today take the tme and write down all the things that I eat and then I will go have a heart to heart with God and I will keep you up to date and tell you how it is going. Beenthere I know that I will fall weak at times so I am asking you to be my support system as well because I know that you have walked in my shoes. Starting weight 351lbs and couting down to a new me.

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement.

Hello Truth.  It is me.  Been There Girl.  Got your message.

Well, I am up to 93 pound loss.  I am sure I have lost more - I go

to my Doctors tomorrow.

I am pleased that your going to try Jesus.  I am convinced He will

Help you....  My God Is Bigger Than My Weight!

writing down the things you eat is a good thing.  Then you can see

the days you may have had a treat and try and keep them in check

so you continue to loose.  I had a hostess orange cakes tonight.

Yum!   This was a stressful week - I found out I have a cataract

in my left eye & have to have surgery.  I am so nervous!  They

want to put a cheap lens in my eye - to have "the best" lens - but

they cost $1,000 each!  And medicaid will NOT pay for it.

So please pray for me to be able to obtain this new lens so I can

see better and maybe loose my glasses!  Cool

I too, tried everything else, but when I did go to God - at 328 lbs,

I was at my wits end.  It always helps when we realize we all have

walked in someone's shoes.  But I am glad the media allows us to

find each other and stay in touch!  I will support you all I can.

Just remember Paul - the Apostle - he had a thorn in his side that

God would not remove, because God knew he had become "puffed

up"  in the past.  That thorn kept him humble.  We all need to be

humble before the Lord.  He will listen to a humble and contite

heart.  I don't see myself as pretty and I have been corrected

lately.  I still see the fat girl sometimes.  I need to have the money

to buy some clothes - I wear what I have and it is not flattering.

You can't take in Jeans - they tell me it is too hard to sew.

I took my "fat clothes" to a consignment store and sold them.  I

think Goodwill can stand to loose my business - I need the cash.

You have made me smile tonight.  And please keep me informed.

Been There Girl

I don't know your insurance situation, but here in New York must insurance companies & even Medicaid (welfare) will pay for the surgery if it is deemed medically necessary.  If you have other health problems related to obesity, that usually fulfills the "medically necessary" requirement.  They don't all get approved on the first try, sometimes you must be patient and resubmit more than once.  Some surgeon's office staff will help you with that process.

Despite what an earlier poster said, you do not need to weigh 400 lbs. to have this surgery.  You must be at least 100 lbs. overweight, and be a good candidate for major surgery.  There will be many tests ordered by your surgeon before he will operate, and you will need to consider how you will pay for those if you are not insured.  My surgeon said he would probably not do this surgery on anyone over 70; other surgeons might have different limits.  You might want to see if there are any weight loss surgery support groups in your area (check with hospitals where the surgery is done), and attend a few of those meetings to gather more information.  Those folks can offer very valuable help & information.

Anna,

If your doctor is not listening to you, you need to get another doctor. You didn't say how much you weigh but I would suggest that you look at a lap band before the gastric bypass. I am a nurse and have worked for health insurance companies for many years. I have seen many very very ill people from gastic bypass. There are potential for so many problems. The lap band is less drastic change in your anatomy. You must be willing and dedicated to lifestyle changes in order for it to be effective. You will ALWAYS AND FOREVER have to eat small portions and healthy food. If you do not you can increase the size of the pouch and regain the weight. If you have insurance and you get approval for the surgery, you may not need savings to pay for your surgery. You need to discuss this with a bariatric surgery specialist in your area.

You may want to read what I told Truth in these posts.  See, the thing is most insurance companies think this is cosmetic surgery.  Your Doctor has to jump in and

tell them that you have a legitimate health issue and you NEED this surgery.

I had a pandectomy and that is that big Apron of fat around your abdomen.  I also had

a hernia.  That helped me cause they had to correct it.   It would say after 4 yrs.

its time to loose this Dr.  - he is stalling you.  Do all you can -  give up the junk food

and live a healthy diet.  That's all there is.  If you do not have doctors on board -

go for a consultation.

Trust God to help you and He will.

If there are any free gastric bypass surgeries, SIGN ME UP. I'll do it.

I'm 22 years old and I'm on the right track for an early heart attack. I've been the fat friend or the fat girl all of my life. I played softball and got teased everyday. I've been the fat girls for 22 years and now I dont wasn't to be that person anymore. I want to walk out of my house and feel okay. I dont want to hurry up get out of the stores because people are looking at me. I want to be normal. Because right now I'm abnormal and I feel like people are constantly looking and judging me. I hate going on my lunch break at work because I know that people are making fun of me and making jokes when I walk past them. I want a new life and it starts with this surgery. Will somebody please help me?

Ya, me too. I would love to have this done. But no insurance and no money, but enough fat. I just can't do it on my own. The diet doesn't do it for me. Why not try it?

I hate to break it to you jackass, but some people can't lose weight easily!  I know a few people who are overweight, but they can't lose any because of thyroid problems.  It has nothing to do with 'eating' or 'laziness'.  It doesn't matter if you exercise or eat healthy, having thyroid problems makes it VERY difficult to lose weight!  So, instead of being a douchebag, try saying something encouraging instead of talking out of your ass!  If you can't say anything nice, shut the fu*k up!

Ya typical excuse from fat ppl, " thyroid ", if that's the case then Gastric Bypass will do nothing for you. Just admit that you're a lazy sluggard who would rather sit on the couch and stuff your face instead of working out.

lmao  You are a fu*king dumbass!  lol  Do you even know what Gastric Bypass surgery is?  Gastric Bypass is a surgery that makes your stomach smaller, therefore allowing LESS food to enter it.  Did you read that?  Let me spell it out for you again:  L E S S!  Some people's thyroids keep them from gaining weight and others keep them from losing weight.  You can STILL lose the weight, but it takes longer, thus the reason to speed things up and have the surgery.  Do your research next time, genius!  Next time, at least TRY and post a legitimate argument.  Don't make it THIS easy!  As Bill Engval would say to YOU:  HERE'S YOUR SIGN!

Wow being fat and angry is a bad combination, don't you know that self control will also  allow less food from entering, if you go on the same diet as the people who have had gastric bypass surgery are put on, you will also lose the weight but most people want the easy, lazy way out. Seems to me like you're the one who needs to do some research. Losing weight is about making a complete lifestyle change not just get a surgery and sit on the couch watching the weight melt away. For many people being obese is a mental handicap not a physical one. Don't take my word for it just GOOGLE it and see for yourself sweetie. The argument i post is not based upon what i think but from personal experience and I know what it feels like to be stared at because of my size but i got off the couch and into the gym and changed my life. My mother has a thyroid condition which, if she let it rule her life, would make her very big but she controls what she eats therfore not letting it get the best of her.Best of luck in your weight loss goals and you should get help for your anger lif'e to short to blow up over words...

lol When did I say I was fat? I never said I was, you said you was. I don't need surgery! If you would READ instead of jumping off at the mouth, you may have knew that. Also, I don't have anger problems. I just hate MORONS who have nothing better to do than to come on the Internet and talk about people. Like I said earlier, a lot of people have trouble losing weight due to thyroid problems. I know a few people who had difficulty GAINING weight due to thyroid problems as well as people who had difficulty LOSING weight.  Also, thyroid problems can also SWITCH; from making it difficult for someone to lose weight, and then later it will be difficult for someone to gain weight.  Maybe you should be the one googling.  Because, it is obvious that you know NOTHING about thyroid problems!  You are just like any other non-educated person, who wants to blame the individual for the problem.  Do you go around calling mentally challenged people 'retarded', just because they were born that way?  I am sure, in your eyes, that they are at fault too.  Right?  How about people with down-sydrome...  Is it their fault as well?  See, how this works?  Some things in life CANNOT be avoided.  Yes, some people in the world are lazy and eat a lot.  But, people with thyroid problems have it more difficult.  Ask your family doctor.  Because, it is obvious that you know NOTHING about it.  You never know, you may actually learn something.

Thank you for the info also, yes i did learn a few things and there's no better way to learn than with argumentative corespondence, seriously I have learned a few things from you and one thing I know for sure is not to argue with a woman it's a no win situation. In all fairness though, I realize it's hard for alot of people to lose weight maam but seriously in America obesity is due to bad lifestyles and over eating you must admit, I know you're not so naive as to believe everyone has a thyroid problem...lol you SEEM smarter than that.

First of all, I am not a woman. lol I don't know where you got that idea. Secondly, I never said that EVERYONE had thyroid problems.  I know a lot of people are just lazy.  But, there are a LOT of people that do have thyroid problems.  And, it can be extremely difficult to lose/gain weight, depending on what type of thyroid problem you have.

My blood pressure is great (118/79), my cholesterol is fine (195).  I do not have diabetes (blood glucose 90).  I am fairly active - I live in the country on a farm and take care of cattle, chickens, mow and weed eat the inner yard (that is about an acre) - with a push mower and hand held weed eater.

But I guess the biggest dissapointment in all of this - and believe me there are many - are the people who say the things that you have been saying.  I have a documented case - documented by my pcp, ob/gyn, dietician, exercise physiologist.  All 4 have recommended I have gastric bypass surgery (which I can't afford).

As far as what I eat - I eat between 1200 - 1600 calories per day.  My body burns 2200 calories per day resting.  I exercise frequently, which medical experts I consulted (ie dietician, etc) have estimated burns 200 - 400 calories per day.  So all in all, I burn 2200 - 2600 calories on a given day.  I restrict on average 1000 calories every single day with my diet and exercise.  I do not sit on the couch all day long as I stated earlier in this thread.

So you tell me - what options does all of this leave me?  Oh, I know - you said it earlier - quit sitting on the couch and shoveling food in.  Or quit spending money on food and use it on gastric bypass.  Or go to the gym and lose weight the way you are.

Well, I don't sit on the couch and shovel the food in.  It costs on average $22,000.00 in my state to get gastric bypass.  I don't spend that in a year on food - probably 2 or 3 years actually.  So I quit eating for that long?  I did go to a gym - one ran by a hospital and I was supervised by medical personnel.

And as I said before - I don't believe I am alone in this - I believe there are others like me.

I know how you feel! I am a 31 year old, single mother of one. I work a full time job and I do have health insurance! I pay $144 every two weeks for my coverage. I have always been a "big girl". Even as a child.  I have gone to three different doctors and they have all told me that my insurance will not cover the cost of the surgery. My BMI is 59. I see a dietican, which come out of my pocket, go to curves, and do exercise on a  regular basis. I have called my insurance company myself and have gotten turned down because my employer does not cover that surgery. Meanwhile, I am still doing the right thing by going to the doctors and curves, but not having all the money to spend on these things, my loans have become stacked up on each other. Now I am "stealing from Peter to pay Paul". I will die very soon if I can't get this weight off. My five year old son will be w/out his mother. I am very hard working, but just can't get the weight off. My doctor told me that he could do the surgery for $18,500 dollars. I can't even get a loan to pay for this. It hurts so bad to see people who don't even work getting the surgery. And where I keep a full time job and not on any state assitance and I have the insurance, but they will not pay for my life surgery. I have evvn tired getting insurance on side seperate from what I have from work, but when they find out my weight, they deny me. I tired the Alli diet, Atkins, and slim fast. I can't do certain things because I have a seizure disorder. Lord knows that I just want to be able to see my son walk across the stage. Or get married and have his own kids. My grandkids. If you know of anything else I can try please let me know. Thank you for your time.

Were do I start. I 22 years old and I am living with obesity. I tell people that a love the way I am, but I don't. I wish I could walk a store and not have to walk all the way to the back to have to find my size. I wish I can walk down the street and have the boys look at me too and not only my skinny friends. I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me, trust me. I just want to look in the mirror and see the person I am on the inside. I'm a college student and I'm seeing what I can't do because of my size and it really hunts me. I'm young I want to feel young and do the things young people do. Like, travel, kiss boys, dance the night way at clubs, and even model or acted. My size tells me only skinny girls do that and I cant and I think its true. No one in a club wants to dance with the fat girl. I just want to have a chance to live a happy young life before it's too late for me. I don't want to die of obesity. I mean it's not like I don't work out. I play four spots (softball, volleyball, soccer and, basketball) and I lift weights. So, tell me why I'm 22 year old 5 feet 7 and 260. I don't know what else to do.

Everybody out there needs to know that @ 15% of bariatric surgeries DO NOT WORK!  I am one of the unlucky 15%.  I now have no stomach and my health is horrible.  I don't digest food and have either terrible diarrhea or I have to throw up my food. I constantly have awful pains where my intestines are connected to my esophagus (can you even picture that?) which are unbearable and force me to the emergency room.  I haven't found anything that alleviates this.

I can't digest protein and my hair, for example, is horrible.  I colored it once and hunks of it fell out.  I tried to get a perm and all of my REAL color came out. There is another operation which can fix this - Biliopancreatic Diversion Bypass (BPD)- but it is ANOTHER $30,000 and insurance WILL NOT PAY.

From: http://www.annecollins.com/health-dangers-of-gastric-bypass-surgery.htm

  • About 10-20 percent of patients undergoing stomach bypass require follow-up operations to correct complications, the most common complaints being abdominal hernias.
  • More than one-third of patients who have gastric bypass surgery develop gallstones.
  • Complication rates in the early post-operative period, such as infection, dehiscence, leaks from staple breakdown, stomal stenosis, ulcers and deep thrombo-phlebitis may be as high as ten percent or more. However, the combined risk of the most serious complications (gastrointestinal leak and deep venous thrombosis) is less than one per cent.
  • Over the long term, the health complications of gastric bypass may include a variety of conditions and problems. According to one 14-year follow-up study of stomach bypass patients, the morbidity rates were as follows: vitamin B12 deficiency (39.9 percent), incisional hernia, (23.9 percent), depression (23.7 percent), staple line failure (15 percent), gastritis ( 13.2 percent), cholecystitis (11.4 percent), anastomotic problems (9.8 percent), dehydration malnutrition (5.8 percent), dilated pouch (3.2 percent).
