Q: I have unexplained full-body edema. Blood tests say my organ functions are fine. Dr gave diuretics. I lost 8 pounds of water in 3 days. It all comes back later when I stop the diuretics.

I'm 40 and male. I quit smoking 9 months ago and expected some weight gain. I put on 35 pounds. I feel bloated all the time, my clothes don't fit, my ring gets tight, when I take off my socks the indent above my ankles stays for over an hour. I have no diagnosis and the doctor thinks it will just clear itself up... he's unconcerned because my heart and other organs are doing fine according to blood and urine tests. What could be going on? The swelling has probably been there for a long time. I have traveled and lived abroad. I often eat raw foods. I am barefoot frequently. We do have animals around. Could it be related to parasites? How could that be diagnosed?

Hi jaydee,

I'm not so sure about parasites.  Honestly, I've not researched any connection they might have to edema or water retention.  Although your blood tests look good, have you undergone a pulmonary function test?  It might be a good idea to see how your lungs/heart are functioning.  Deficiencies in these organs/functions can cause all sorts of difficulties, edema being just one of them.

Talk to your doctors again.  See if there is something else to be explored besides diuretics.  Perhaps you could research to see what food act naturally as a diuretic and see if they have any positive effect on your symptoms.  I'm not a medical professional by any means and defer to the expertise of those who are.

I hope that you begin to feel better soon.
